NEWS TIPS newsroom@tbw.com.au Awards presented MARGARET Millowick has been named the 2013 Mount Gambier Senior Citizen of the Year. The award was announced at the Mount Gambier and District Senior Citizens Club, where Garry Vandepeer was also honoured, receiving the Mount Gambier Senior Recreation Award. Margaret is known to many for her ability to inspire confi dence in others through her quiet determination and her ability to encourage a sense of team work and community connectedness. She has made a large contribution to the community, having been involved with Meals on Wheels since 1978. Her history with the service is detailed in the booklet Good Morning, Meals on Wheels Calling. Margaret was described as having a strong social conscience and praised for dedicating much of her time to the community. She has volunteered with Camp Sunshine and is the current president of the Mount Gambier Croquet Club. Since retiring from his long-standing position as a high school teacher in Mount Gambier, Garry has been involved with the University of the Third Age (U3A). He is a presenter, team leader, part of the management team and represents Mount Gambier at a state level with the U3A South Australian Alliance. The award was made in recognition of his outstanding volunteer efforts both on behalf of U3A and the Mount Gambier Men’s Shed, which he founded. Around three years ago, Garry to inspiring seniors Ongoing community service recognised LICENSED commercial fishers across South Australia can now lodge Fishwatch reports straight from their smartphone or mobile device thanks to a new commercial fi shing reporting app. Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Gail Gago said the free SA Fisheries and Aquaculture Commercial Reporting app now available on Apple and Android mobile devices was one of the fi rst online tools available to commercial fi shers in Australia. “Available only to licensed South Australian commercial fi shers, the app will make it easier for them to report regulated activities, including the prior reporting of fi shing activities, to Fishwatch,” Ms Gago said. “This has been developed in response to feedback received from fi shers and it now means that they can lodge these reports without the NEWS 5 App streamlines Fishwatch reporting hassle and cost of phone calls.” Ms Gago said to enable eligible fi shers to access the app, a unique identifi cation number was available through Fishwatch by calling 1800 065 922. Once the number is entered into the app, report details will be stored, making submitting regular reports quicker. “While Primary Industries and Regions South Australia already provides a number of ways for fi shers to conduct their mandatory reporting, the app provides further fl exibility when submitting their reports,” Ms Gago said. “By making the reporting process easier it also means assisting our fi sheries to remain some of the best sustainably-managed fi sheries in the world.” Windows phone devices will be able to access the app in the near future. The hearing aids will be remodelled by the Adelaide University audiology students for fitting to needy South Australians. If you have any sitting in drawers please put them to a good use.
