NEWS TIPS newsroom@tbw.com.au NEWS 7 Tourists to see state from new perspective SOUTH Australia’s rugged landscapes, pristine beaches and world famous wine regions will be even easier for Victorians to access with the launch of three new luxury Air Adventure Australia air safaris. Departing from Melbourne, the new itineraries explore South Australia’s famed regions, including the Limestone Coast, Barossa, Clare Valley, Kangaroo Island and the Flinders Ranges. HISTORY DISPLAYED: Emilie Welden and Ezrah Walsh are among the Compton Primary School students who worked hard to research and compile history pieces for the 150th celebrations. They have invited past students and the general public to view the history on display at the school from tomorrow to Sunday. School stands test of time Compton primary celebrates rich 150 year history BLA AN anelia BLACKIE ANELIA anelia@tbw.com.au JACK Lewis still remembers how he snapped the cane when he once got into trouble in school. Dressed in shorts - even in winter - he used to walk nearly two miles to and from Compton Primary School every day and spent a lot of his time playing football and cricket. “If you talked you got the cane, but girls would have homework,” he said in an interview with current students. The 97-year-old Jack will join 99-year-old Mavis Mawson (nee Leggett) as the longest living former students to plant a tree during the school’s 150th birthday celebrations on Sunday. The students rounded up a few former scholars for interviews ahead of the celebrations, including 95-year-old Edna Summers and 91-year-old Max McPherson, who remember their schooling in the 1920s with fondness. They will be among the special guests at the offi cial opening of the celebrations at 9.30am on Sunday. Along with the special event, a time capsule will also be buried and a commemorative mosaic will be unveiled. Because of the school’s proud history of commemorating Anzac and Remembrance days over many years, a remembrance service will be included in the opening. The names of the soldiers listed in the Compton Hall have been compiled into a booklet, which will be on sale during the weekend’s celebrations, which kick-off tomorrow with re-enactments of school eras of the past through singing, dancing and acting. From 1pm to 3.30pm tomorrow, students dressed in costumes from different eras will demonstrate lessons from eras matching their outfi ts and they will sing songs from the 1940s. Compton Downs and Compton The State Government has provided $35,000 to help get the project off the ground through its product support program for the tourism industry. Tourism Minister Leon Bignell said the air safaris were an exciting opportunity for the industry, featuring an 11-seat luxury aircraft. “By providing direct access from Melbourne, the tours will encourage Victorian visitors to experience the wonders of regional South Australia,” Mr Bignell said. “The introduction of Air Adventure Australia’s three new luxury air safaris is a great way of discovering some of our most beautiful regions.” Air Adventure Australia managing director John Dyer said South Australia was an ideal destination for air safaris. “I see South Australia as a state that has the lot, including amazing food and wine, outback landscapes and incredible coastline,” Mr Dyer said. “Our tours make the South Australian outback very accessible to both tourists using Melbourne as a gateway city and people living on the eastern seaboard.” Among the experiences on offer is the opportunity to participate in an exclusive Mayura Station Wagyu Masterclass as part of a one day tour of the Coonawarra region. The new air safaris range from one to six days with each itinerary offered twice a year.
