The cross was a gift from Mr Legoe’s great great grandmother and Mary MacKillop’s life-long friend Joanna Barr-Smith. Pictures: SAM DOWDY Penola centre hosts original Mary MacKillop memorial cross DO SA WDY SAM sam@tbw.com.au am@ AN AUTHENTIC piece in the history of Australia’s fi rst saint was officially unveiled at the Mary MacKillop Penola Centre on Sunday afternoon. A memorial cross, which stood above Mary MacKillop’s original grave at Sydney’s Gore Hill Cemetery, has been loaned to the centre and will remain on display during the coming months. The cross and headstone was a gift from the saint’s life-long friend Joanna Barr-Smith after Mary MacKillop passed away in 1909. In 1914, MacKillop’s body was exhumed and reburied in a marble vault at north Sydney’s Mount Street Chapel - also a gift from Ms BarrSmith. The cross and headstone were returned to Ms Barr-Smith and eventually to a family property called Birksgate, in Adelaide, where it stood in the garden until the contents of the property was sold at auction in the early 1970s. The unique artefact was purchased by Adelaide-based antique dealer Jim Elder, who sold the headstone but retained the iron cross as a feature behind his antique gallery. Mr Elder approached the Mary MacKillop Penola Centre recently with an idea to display the cross as part of celebrations surrounding the anniversary of Mary MacKillop’s canonisation in October.
