Walk improves health Hotel fundraiser delivers medical boost KELLY-BAKKER GEORGIA K G georgia@tbw.com.au ge THE Federal Hotel has given back to the community with donations to the Mount Gambier Hospital, St John Ambulance volunteers and Ronald McDonald House. The Mount Gambier business raised more than $6000 earlier this year at its treadmill-a-thon event, which featured two treadmills set up in the hotel. Participants were rostered to walk or run, ensuring at least one of the treadmills was used throughout a 24-hour period. The hotel then divided the funds equally between the three organisations, with each receiving $2036. The Mount Gambier Hospital will now purchase a continuous glucose sensor for its patients with diabetes. Diabetes nurse practitioner Barbie Sawyer said the donation was unexpected and wonderful. “We’ve been waiting for a sensor for some time, so to be able to purchase one is amazing,” Ms Sawyer said. She said the sensor would be able to monitor a patient’s blood glucose for six days. “Often people with diabetes who are using insulin will experience GENEROUS DONATION: St John Ambulance volunteer Alan Ferguson receives a cheque from the Federal Hotel’s Alana Hogg. Minister for Youth Tony Piccolo said more than 12,000 young South Australians were involved in National Youth Week activities this year. “Next year’s theme is ‘Our Voice, Our Impact’ and I’m sure there will be plenty of exciting opportunities for groups to showcase their great ideas,” he said. Mr Piccolo said individual grants of up to $4000 were available out of a total pool of $137,000 in state and Commonwealth government funding to help young people to put their creative ideas for National Youth Week into action. An extra $7000 is available for the state launch. Grants are open to councils with a current youth advisory committee, as well as State Government agencies and non-government organisations working with young people. Applications close on November 12.
