34 SPORT Snapper closure SPOT ON FISHING WITH CRAIG PHILP AS of noon on Friday, the snapper closure in South Australia begins and will reopen at noon on December 15. Only a handful of fi sh have been caught in close over the last couple of weeks. Travis Brooks boated a lovely 61cm snapper on Sunday and dropped a solid school shark boat side out off Danger Point. Numbers will build up over the next six weeks and should be in full swing when the closure is lifted. Gummy shark and school shark catches have been excellent from Orwells Rocks all the way down to the mouth of the Glenelg. Most boaties, from what I can gather, have been fi shing around the kelp and out to about 10 to 12 metres of water. John McDonnell and Dale Richards boated four lovely gummys on Monday down towards Green Point. Whether you’re fi shing to the east or west of Port MacDonnell, you put in the time and you’re almost certain of connecting to a shark or two. The Port MacDonnell jetty has continued to fi sh well for squid this week. Not known for big numbers in the past, most “fi shos” are regularly landing up to a dozen or so in a session. Using fresh squid for bait, a couple of lads landed several gummy shark off the Port MacDonnell breakwater Sunday night. Just goes to show what good fresh bait will produce. The Nene Valley beach has been weedy but late afternoon is still fi shing well for salmon. Further along the beach towards Blackfellows Caves should start to fi sh well for gummies and mulloway from now on. Even better with fresh salmon for bait. Whiting numbers are improving each week. Inside the Port MacDonnell breakwater through to Nene Valley is fi shing really well. No news from Gerloff and Cape Banks yet but with the weather at last showing signs of improvement, I’m sure the grapevine will let us know shortly. No major news from the Glenelg River this week other than bream, estuary perch and small mulloway on vibes along Taylor’s Straight. The estuary has also fi shed reasonably well. The Glenelg River Angling Club kicks off its season this Saturday. It runs a day competition, starting at 7am and weigh-in at 5.30pm. The night competition starts at 6pm and weigh-in at 9am Sunday morning. Sign on and weigh-ins are at Donovans and all times are SA time. shop. week. Pictured are Your A Wally (Debbie Thacker), Osti’s Victory (Niele) and Walkaway Again (Dean Fennell). Boss Osti will make up the foursome. Patzel eyeing success in N.F. McDonnell Memorial Black Bargain a big chance in 512 metre race DAVID LEWIS VID LEWIS FOR Mount Gambier greyhound trainer Ralph Patzel there’s a touch of irony attached to Sunday afternoon’s N.F. McDonnell Memorial fi nal (512 metres) at Tara Raceway. Twelve months ago the Patzel-trained Wattaira looked to be a top chance of winning the time-honoured race, which is run in memory of Newman McDonnell who was president of the South East Greyhound Club when racing fi rst commenced in 1979. Wattaira had raced to fi nal favouritism after powering home down the middle of the home straight in a heat to defeat Ten Doeschate in a best of day time of 30.51 seconds. It was a pleasing win, with the trainer having purchased the black daughter of Scull Murphy and Magic Elite as a pup. However the elation was short-lived 93 Commercial Street East, Mount Gambier Phone8725 8825 8725 8825 for service, price and right advice for service, price and right advice We need everyone’s help to buy aircraft and KEEP THE ROYAL FLYING DOCTOR FLYING. Please send your donations to: PO Box 1426, Mount Gambier, SA 5290 34 - The Border Watch, Thursday, October 31, 2013 as Wattaira was deemed by stewards to have failed to pursue on the home turn and she was suspended for 28 days. A couple of months ago, probably more by accident than anything, Patzel happened to be in the right place at the right time and was offered a tiny 25 kilogram black bitch by the name of Black Bargain to train. Owned in Victoria by Joe Gigliotti, she had won only one race – a maiden tier three at Bendigo over 425 metres – and that had been almost 12 months ago. However with Wattaira having recently been retired Patzel fi gured this one might be able to fi ll the gap until something better came along. As it turned out, Black Bargain is a litter sister to Wattaira and it didn’t take long for her to register a couple of strong-fi nishing 400 metre wins at Tara Raceway. And at her fi rst try over 512 metres, Black Bargain, in a manner similar to that of her sister a year ago, also fi nished powerfully down the middle of the home straight last Friday to win her heat of the memorial. The only difference was there was no trip to the stewards’ room this time. Patzel has had to wait another 12 months but N.F. McDonnell Memorial success with one of the breed is still a distinct possibility. Tiger King, trained at Portland by Andy Graham, also had his fi rst run over 512 metres when winning his memorial heat in the good time of 30.64 seconds. Like Black Bargain, he should be improved by the run and from box one in Sunday’s $685-to-the-winner fi nal Tiger King looks to be one of the hardest to beat in view of his outstanding record from that draw. Fastest of last Friday’s three heat winners was Bourne Again which was a brilliant winner from box one for Allendale East trainer David Peckham. Despite drawing box six in the fi nal, the brindle daughter of Collision and Bourne Replica once again will be hard to hold out if she gains a clear run early. Incidentally, Black Bargain won’t be her dam’s only runner at Sunday’s meeting. Magic Elite will be well represented in the Produce Store Stake (400m) by Black Bargain’s full brother Scull Magic along with half- brother Bent Fender and half-sisters Galactic Blue and Indigo Magic. Another half-brother in Galactic Impact looks well placed from box two in the Bartholomew Stake (512m) for owner-trainer Robert Chuck of Moorak. Berringa trainer Michael Niele, fresh from a double at last Friday’s meeting, has another big team of eight runners engaged on Sunday. He holds a strong hand in the Barry’s Door Services Mixed Stake with Boss Osti, Walkaway Again, Your A Wally and Osti’s Victory clashing in the 400 metre event. However, the Steve Bartholomew trained short-course specialist Azumi Touch is well drawn in box seven and could prove to be the stumbling block. Damonic looks well drawn in box seven in The Border Watch Open Maiden (512m) and could give punters a good start to the meeting. Trained at Apsley by Darren Henderson, Damonic found himself well back in a 400 metre maiden last Sunday before running home well to fi nish second to Geisha Angel. A litter brother to Flaming Gold, which won at Gawler last Sunday night for Compton trainer Tracie Price, Damonic should appreciate the 512 metre journey. Henderson also looks to have a good chance in the Allestree Holiday Units Stake (512m) with Stetson Jimmy. The black dog had no luck at Horsham on Tuesday afternoon but a couple of recent sound seconds at Tara Raceway over 512 metres would suggest he’s not far away from opening his winning account at the local track. Meanwhile, Mount Gambier Country Cup representative Arbour Elvis went around the Gawler track on Tuesday night in a heat of the $37,500 Gawler Gold Cup (531m). It was always going to be tough ask for Arbour Elvis and he never really got into the race. However, Glencoe owner-trainer Barry Shepheard had been keen to give the dog a look at the track in readiness for Sunday night’s $5000 SA Country Cup fi nal. Kennelmate Rouse Flyer, which also ran in a Gold Cup heat, was prominent throughout before running fourth. Mount Gambier’s other Country Cup representative, Moorak Hope, had a look at the Gawler track at last Sunday night’s meeting when she ran second for trainer Tracie Price.
