Johnson meets heroes at hockey championships REDBACKS Hockey Club junior Finn Johnson recently represented South Australia for the second year in succession at the Australian Under 13 Boys Hockey Championships. Held in Melbourne earlier this month, the Lower South East Hockey Association talent ventured over the border for the eight day carnival as part of a ROLE MODEL: In a big thrill for Mount Gambier’s Finn Johnson, the Under 13 talent met Eddie Ockenden who was named player of the series in the Australian Hockey League Championships. 16 member SA squad. Johnson lined up as full back for the entire championships, enjoying his time as a starter for every game and spending a majority of each clash out on the fi eld. The SA team that was selected included a good mix of country and metropolitan based players and was coached by Nic Lohmeyer while Lee Rippon acted as team manager. South Australia had a successful competition, winning against Northern Territory and having a draw with Tasmania. It also had four losses and fi nished sixth on the ladder behind Victoria, Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory. A highlight for Johnson was the introduction of running the men’s Australian Hockey League Championships in conjunction with the Under 13 championship. The best Australian men hockey players from each state and territory competed at the same venue which allowed the team to watch and support the South Australian Hotshots team. During the rest day Johnson and his teammates were thrilled to participate in a one hour clinic with the members of the SA Hotshots, which included former Mount Gambier player Harry Gill who was also originally from the Redbacks Hockey Club. Johnson was also able to watch some of his hockey heroes such as Jamie Dywer and Eddie Ockenden play on the same pitch that he was also playing on. Thoroughly enjoying the whole experience, Johnson now has a goal of trying to now make the Under 15 state team in the future. SE quintet represents SA against elite bowlers THE Port MacDonnell Bowls Club duo of Heather and Chris Richards have joined Bordertown’s Di Murch, Frances’ Peter Mueller and Keith’s Geoff Hams in representing South Australia at the State Senior Sides Championships in Belmont, Geelong last week. The quintet of Lower South East Bowls Association members were a part of a 24-strong SA squad which comprised equal numbers of men and women. A total of 180 bowlers from around STATE CAP: Peter Mueller (Frances), Geoff Hams (Keith), Di Murch (Bordertown), Heather Richards (Port MacDonnell) and Chris Richards (Port MacDonnell) represented South Australia at the State Senior Sides Championships in Belmont, Geelong last week. the nation converged on the Belmont Bowling Club to compete over the four days, getting underway with a practice held on October 21 (Monday). Two games of 21 ends were then played on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with the final game on Friday morning. Conditions throughout the week were less than ideal with approximately 15mm of rain recorded, but there was no stopping as bowlers played through the rain regardless. Thursday was the fi rst day that the sun emerged but with it came the wind. By this time the greens were wet and conditions were best described as extremely heavy. While not winning a lot of games, some big scalps were claimed by South Australia and all were grateful to have had the opportunity to compete in such an elite competition.
