Taking to the pitch at the Glenelg Baseball Club grounds, Mount Gambier met the Gawler Rangers in its fi rst game of the tournament. The match started with Blayke McMillian on the pitching mound where he threw well and ensured the Gawler batters struggled to hit. McMillian threw seven strike outs, only giving up one hit in a three innings game. However the Mount Gambier batters also struggled to get hits, leaving the score 0-0 after three innings. Wade Chant was next on the mound for Mount Gambier and his day didn’t go to plan for coach Michael Summers as Chant found it hard to fi nd the strike zone and after one innings the score was 1-6 with Gawler ahead. The Mount team rallied in the last innings with solid pitching and fi elding and some great batting from Riley Rolph, Tom Rundle and Kirby Hillyer, allowing the team to win the game 8-6. Game two saw Mount Gambier take on Sunraysia and in similar form to the fi rst match the pitchers for both sides controlled the game through the fi rst four innings. Mount Gambier’s left handed pitcher Liam Van Schaik threw six strike outs and allowed one hit for his 45 pitchers. Coach Summers was happy with the young pitcher as it was his fi rst year at under 15s level. Chant shook his nerves from the fi rst game to recored two hits and Hillyer continued his solid batting with two hits also and Mount Gambier ran out with the win. Sunday’s game had Mount Gambier facing off against the other underfeated side of the championships in Sunraysia White. Tom Vassallo started on the mound for Mount Gambier and pitched a solid game with four strike outs and giving two hits away. Mount Gambier batters again COUNTRY CHAMPS: The Mount Gambier under 15 country championship team comprised Lachlan Beelitz, Lauchie Jackman-Tilley, Tom Vassallo, Blayke McMillan, Kirby Hillyer, Alex Harkness, Matthew Porter, Brodie Gregory, Tom Rundle, Brandon Telford, Wade Chant, Liam VanShaik, Riley Rolph, Sam Shaw, Keelan McClean and Kain McMillan with Michael Summers (coach), and Peter Harkness (assistant coach). did some very smart batting picking up the walks and some hits to put themselves in a good postion for the win but Sunraysia White proved too strong as the game continued, winning the game 6-5. Playing back to back games the under 15s fi rst year players were the ones to take the diamond in the last minor round game before fi nals. Lauchie Tilley-Jackman took to the mound and threw a solid game a good effort for a young player. All the fi rst year players experienced a bigger diamond and longer games and Sunraysia were strong in this game, winning 12-3. In the grand final Mount Gambier faced the highly ranked Sunraysia White and already played in one close game, coaches and players knew they were in for a great game. Both teams pitchers controlled the game till the third innings when Mount Gambier batters started to hit the ball with hits to Vassallo and stand up doubles to McMillian and Rolph. Mount jumped out to a 3-0 lead, with McMillian pitching another solid game with three strike outs and six hits throughout three innings but Sunraysia White could only turn the hits into three runs with some outstanding fi elding by Mount Gambier. It stayed 3-3 right until the end of normal time so extra innings were needed to fi nd a winner. Sunraysia White kept its cool, needing one out with loaded bases Mount Gambier couldn’t score the run it needed so it was into the fi eld to hold Sunraysia. Chant pitched the fourth, striking out the fi rst batter, a hit to third baseman Rolph and a throw to fi rst had the second out but Chant walked the next batter. The runner tried to steal second and a great throw from catcher Vassallo had the runner tagged for the third out. Mount Gambier were on a high and the crowd who had stayed were being treated to a great game of under age baseball. Batting in the fi fth innings Mount hitters started hitting Vassallo, McMillian, Keelan McClean and a huge home run from Tom Rundle saw the Mount Gambier boys take the the lead 8-3, and with Sunraysia only able to score one run in its last bat the Mount Gambier players had done enough to win the game.
