Eagles lose Saunders To play with Glenelg in 2014 SMITH SM fred@ L. J.L. J.L. “FRED” fred@setimes.com.au HATHERLEIGH premiership skipper Tylah Saunders has dropped a bombshell as he is quitting the club and is trying his hand with South Australian National Football League (SANFL) zone team Glenelg. Saunders is starting pre-season training next month with the Tigers under their new coach Nick Stevens. Among the familiar faces who will welcome him to Brighton Road will be former Mid South East Football League (MSEFL) players Dylan Gamble and Brad Agnew (Mount Burr), Ty Allen (Tantanoola junior and Millicent senior player) and Warrick McGinty (Kongorong). Saunders crowned his 2013 grand fi nal winning season by claiming the prestigious T.R. Skeer Memorial Medal as the club’s champion player. The Eagles had announced in August that their champion player had committed to his home club for a further season. However, Hatherleigh president Mr Bob Jones said Saunders would depart for the capital city next month with the good wishes of all at the club. “He has been given an opportunity by the Glenelg Football Club and we are happy and really proud that he will be representing Hatherleigh at a higher level,” Mr Jones said. “It is quite a while since we have had a home-grown player in the SANFL,” he added. “We would welcome back Tylah at any time. He had wanted to do it (play at Glenelg) for a couple of seasons. “When we came to [contract] discussions for 2014, we knew that going to the SANFL was a possibility. “I will look forward to seeing Tylah play at Glenelg next season when we have our byes.” Saunders, 23, is nowadays a near-automatic selection in such representative teams as the MSEFL, Murray South East and SA Country. He came to the fore over a decade ago when he won the John Seebohm Medal as best-on-ground in the 2003 Junior Colts grand fi nal. As a 15-year-old in 2005, Saunders had his fi rst taste of A grade with the Eagles. In that season, he won the Malseed Medal as the best and fairest in the MSEFL Senior Colts competition. Meanwhile, the reigning MSEFL premiers look resigned to the fact that they will be heading into 2014 without two other premiership players. Ex vice-captain Josh Sandland is returning to the Riverland to live while ruckman Tom Agnew has signalled he will be going on a long holiday. The club is understood to be in discussion with a number of potential recruits including ex-SANFL player Caolan Buckley who is the younger brother of 2013 assistant coach Ciaran Buckley. In other MSEFL news, the draft program for 2014 has been issued to the nine clubs for comment and there is no mention made of Millicent. Over seven weeks ago, the WBFL Saints had announced their intention to investigate the possibility of returning to the MSEFL. to Adelaide to train with West Adelaide Hellas in the national league, and played two friendly matches with them, scoring in the fi rst match played. Following his national success Stephenson played professionally for seven years at White City, Enfi eld and Port Adelaide Lion soccer clubs. Stephenson has also been coached by former Socceroo John Aloisi’s father Rocky with his biggest highlight being playing a season with former captain of the Socceroos Milan Ivanovic. Stephenson said he is ready to share his soccer knowledge with the players and fellow coaching staff at Sharks Soccer Club. “Now I would like to pass on everything I have learnt and experienced and give back to soccer what it has given to me,” he said. Taking on a new challenge and making the move from Apollo Soccer Club Warren McCallum will be coaching the under 17 side at Sharks. Current WBSA junior sports director, McCallum has an extensive coaching background, ranging from 1995 till present. McCallum began coaching at Greystanes Soccer Club in Sydney, spending eight years as a junior coach and achieving seven years as undefeated champions with his team. Moving to Mount Gambier late 2002 saw McCallum join the WBSA and Apollo Soccer Club to coach the under 11 squad from 2004-2006 and the under 12s from 2007-2012, collecting trophies along the way including the Belgiorno Caffe cup and premiership wins. In 2005 McCallum took on the senior coaching position for Wanderers in the South East Women’s Football Association (SEWFA) and has coached the side every year till present. The team has claimed a number of titles and achievements including premiership runners-up in 2009 and 2010, undefeated premiers in 2011, premiers in 2012, premiership runners-up in 2013 and preseason carnival winners in 2011 and 2012. SEWFA introduced its junior competition in 2008 and McCallum coached the under 14 squad from 2008-2010 with premiership wins from 20092011.
