Scattered in the group of proud former staff members were the hospital’s fi rst chief executive offi cer, the director of nursing and orderlies, supply and pharmacy staff and tutors, clerical, cleaning, palliative care, volunteers and maintenance workers. Importantly, there was also a handful of people present who have worked at all three Mount Gambier hospitals, including the grand dolomite facility that was sadly demolished. With a high reach excavator now nestled in the front of the site and demolition workers combing the site for the last remaining asbestos material, it was a rare gathering of former personnel MASSIVE BUILDING: The construction of the six storey Mount Gambier Hospital on Lake Terrace West. who once walked the vast corridors of the six-storey building. The looming demolition will see any reminders of the site - which has housed a hospital since 1869 - erased from the landscape, apart from an old sign and the refurbished laundry building. While the hospital was a much-loved site for many years, he said the government deemed remodeling the site as neither cost effective nor achievable on the land-locked site. “It would have cost more to upgrade it than to build a new one,” he said. Mr Bown said the building was also riddled with asbestos.
