The Lady Nelson Visitor & Discovery Centre is working with local website RoomsHere.com to develop a listing of community accommodation, to be known as the Mount Gambier Community Accommodation Hub; aiming to help alleviate some of the problems associated with fi nding accommodation during the major event. Once the scheme has been introduced for the Generations in Jazz event, participants in the “Homestay” program will be offered the opportunity to opt in and out for other major events and might only offer their accommodation once a year. Please note the Community Accommodation Hub will only ever be an adjunct to commercial accommodation. Interested participants should contact The Lady Nelson Visitor & Discovery Centre to obtain an information pack, detailing the guidelines and necessary requirements to participate in this worthwhile scheme. For further information please contact City of Mount Gambier Team Leader Visitor Information, Lisa Braes on (08) 8724 9750 or lbraes@mountgambier.sa.gov.au. In a blow to the Port MacDonnell community, the Coalition Government has yet to announce if it will honour the funding allocated in the latest pool of Regional Development Australia grants. Those projects that have yet to been signed off are now in doubt, including $750,000 for Port MacDonnell, following the result of the federal election. The funding impasse could also affect the State Government’s $1.87m funding allocation, given it was based on a joint government approach. Mr Cutting said the upgrade was jetty,” Mr Cutting said. “The jetty needs a fair bit of work as some of the pylons under the structure have rotted away.” Meanwhile, Grant District Council chief executive officer Trevor Smart said the future of the project was now uncertain because of the question over Federal Government funding. He said council had written to Liberal Member for Barker Tony Pasin, Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Regional Development Minister Warren Truss on the issue, but was yet to receive a response. “It is in limbo,” Mr Smart said. It is all up in the air and we can’t make a decision until we know what the Federal Government decides Grant District Council chief executive offi cer Trevor Smart crucial for the busy port, which was home to 65 vessels. He said the fi shing sector had been lobbying for years for an upgrade to the facilities, including the extension of the wharf to accommodate more vessels and the relocation of the fuel facilities from the jetty. Mr Cutting said the extension of the wharf was critical given it would allow more boats to pull up against the structure. “The jetty is also in disrepair - we need to get the re-fuelling facilities off the “It is all up in the air and we can’t make a decision until we know what the Federal Government decides.” He said the project funding arrangement was a partnership between federal and state governments. If the federal government pulled out, he said this could affect the $1.87m grant from the State Government. Mr Smart said the upgrade of marine facilities was a crucial project for the multimillion-dollar commercial rock lobster industry as well as the bustling recreational sector. “This is a critical project for council and the community,” Mr Smart said. The project was earmarked to get underway in May next year. Government works through fund priorities From front page “I was pleased to receive a request recently from the Mid Murray, Murray Bridge and Coorong councils to meet with me and the Assistant Minister for Infrastructure Jamie Briggs to work through this in the appropriate way,” Mr Pasin said in a statement this week. “I’m in the process of facilitating such a meeting and would be more than happy to include the District Council of Grant in that process.” He said the previous Labor Government promised regional communities, including a number in Barker, money for regional projects based on funding from the mining tax, which raised virtually no money. “I’m proud to be a member of the Coalition Government because our $1b National Stronger Regions Fund is fully funded and accounted for as part of the budget,” Mr Pasin said. “The funding is guaranteed and as the national economy improves we expect more funds will be allocated to the National Stronger Regions Fund.” According to a statement provided by the Liberal Party, the issue of funding noncontracted RDAF projects will be considered in the context of available funds and the most effective way to deliver the National Stronger Regions Fund. “This will give regional communities the certainty they need that projects will be delivered,” the statement said. “The new government is now working through specifi c options on funding for regional development. “This government will deliver a dedicated National Stronger Regions Fund, which will help build the social and community infrastructure so important to modern life, including community facilities and local services.” 632529 632012
