Mathew Jack Bell, 30, was charged with possessing fi rearms, ammunition, a silencer and other equipment. A Mount Gambier District Court jury found him guilty on all charges. The week-long trial saw witnesses take to the stand, many of whom were police offi cers working the day Bell’s home was raided by authorities. On December 13, 2011, police served a warrant to search the Wirrega property, 20 kilometres north-west of Bordertown. The house had been transformed into the local clubhouse for motorcycle gang the Red Devils and the court heard the defendant’s brother led the chapter and paid $100 a week for the use of the house. A built-in bar was added to the lounge room, but Bell still occupied his bedroom, where police found a table with a hidden compartment. Using a mallet and a crowbar to force the table open, police found fi rearms, ammunition and canisters fi lled with a homemade gun powder. Bell was arrested at the scene and later pleaded not guilty to all charges. The guns included a Stirling M20 rifle, Winchester M64, Winchester Cooey 600 and another homemade fi rearm. A total of $2400 cash was also found. Bell, who is a qualifi ed cabinet maker, claimed to not know anything about the hidden table cavity. Many of the items were sent to forensics to be tested and the firearms and silencer had no fi ngerprints. Two white plastic tubs containing gun powder were also tested and a partial print was found, but scientists said it was not a perfect match. As prosecutor Sarah Attar addressed the court, the accused appeared agitated and puzzled, regularly shaking his head when the evidence was displayed to the jury. The defence counsel’s reply painted Bell as the victim. Nicholas Healy, who represented Bell, said his client was not a member of the motorcycle club and that he was “stupid” for letting them take over the home. He said it was obvious the weapons were part of the bikie armoury and that Bell knew nothing, believing the bikie gang put the weapons in the base of the table and moved it into his room. “It was put there by the bikies, they were the ones,” Mr Healy said. “Was he naive? Absolutely. Was he stupid? Absolutely, but that doesn’t make him guilty.” However, the jury unanimously found Bell guilty of all charges. Further submissions will be heard at Adelaide District Court on December 3, where he will be sentenced. MEMBERS of the South Australian police force who have joined charity organisation Cops for Kids have given a huge boost to ac.care on the Limestone Coast to the tune of $15,000. The money comes from 1250 police offi cers who choose to donate from their fortnightly pay with the express purpose of helping charities assist children. Limestone Coast Superintendent Trevor Twilley said the amounts donated each fortnight were up to each individual, but the program had raised $433,000 since its inception in 2006. “After today’s presentation, we have donated to 70 charities across the state that assist children,” he said. “On the Limestone Coast we have had three charities that have been benefi ciaries - the Give Me Five for Kids program, the Millicent and District Community Hospital and now ac.care.” ac.care chief executive Rob Foggo said he was surprised when he heard how much money was being donated. “That is an outstanding donation and will do a huge amount towards meeting the needs of the kids as they come into care and making sure our foster families have the equipment they need to provide the best care for the kids,” he said. “We do receive some government funding, but that doesn’t meet the costs. “Our foster carers are volunteers, they are not on a salary and get a reimbursement to go towards costs of food and education.” ac.care marketing and communications manager Anne Hinkly-Tyler said the money would be used to purchase new equipment vital to the program. “We will be using the donation to support GENEROSITY: Senior Constable Andrew Smelt (left), Superintendent Trevor Twilley and Senior Constable Nick Patterson delivered a huge boost to ac.care on behalf of Cops for Kids this week, presenting foster carers Patti and Naomi and ac.care chief executive Rob Foggo with $15,000. our foster care program by purchasing such items as new car seats and cots so when children come into emergency placement the foster carers have the equipment they need,” she said. “We will also be talking to our team to see what else we need.” Last fi nancial year, 65 foster families in the region provided care for 71 children. One foster carer, Patti, said it was a very satisfying job, although at times emotionally hard. “I have been a foster carer for six years and over that time I have had around 12 to 14 children,” she said. “I just love having the kids, seeing them grow and have a normal family life. “I might take my granddaughter to the swimming pool and I might hear a little girl call out ‘hi Nanna’. “They come and give you a cuddle and I think I must have done something right for them to want to come back. “The reward is seeing their happy little faces, not worrying where they are getting their next meal from or struggling with loud noises or arguments. “They can be at some sort of peace for some short time in their life and understand how a real family works.” PERCY STREET, MOUNT GAMBIER • PHONE (08) 8724 9150 • www.oatmill.com.au ABOUT TIME (M) 2hr5 Fri & Sat: 10.50am, 4.00 & 6.30pm Sun: 10.30am & 4.05pm Mon: 11am & 4.10pm Tues: 10.20am. 3.50 & 6.30pm Wed: 10.50am & 4.15pm SESSION TIMES: FRIDAY 1ST TO WEDNESDAY 6TH NOVEMBER 2013 GRAVITY THOR: THE DARK (M) 1hr45 Fri & Tues: 12.20pm Sat: 6.40pm Sun: 12.25pm Mon: 12.50pm NO FREE LIST WORLD (M) 2hr10 NO FREE LIST Fri:10.00am, 2.15 & 7.00pm Sat: 2.15 & 7.00pm Sun: 2.20 & 7.00pm Mon & Wed: 10.30am, 2.45 & 7.25pm Tues: 10.00am, 2.20 & 7.00pm THOR: THE DARK WORLD (M) 2hr10 NEW Fri: 4.35 & 9.20pm Sat & Tues: 4.40 & 9.20pm Sun: 4.40pm Mon & Wed: 5.05pm NO FREE LIST 6 - The Border Watch, Friday, November 1, 2013 PRISONERS (MA15+) 2hr50 NEW NO ID NO ENTRY Fri & Sat : 1.15 & 8.35pm Sun & Mon: 1.25 & 6.30pm Tues: 1.10pm & 8.35pm Wed: 1.35 & 6.40pm GRAVITY (M) 1hr45 Fri & Tues: 6.40pm Sat: 12.20pm Sun & Mon: 4.25pm Wed: 12.50 & 4.40pm CAPTAIN PHILLIPS (M) 2hr30 Fri & Sat: 10.30am, 1.20 & 9.00pm Sun: 10.40am, 1.15 & 6.40pm Mon: 10.40am, 1.30 & 6.40pm Tues: 10.30am, 1.00 & 9.00pm Wed: 10.45am, 1.30 & 6.50pm 2 GUNS (MA15+) 2hr5 NO ID NO ENTRY Fri, & Sat: 4.20pm Tues: 4.15pm TURBO (G) 1hr50 Sat & Sun: 10.20am 625942 3950788 626058
