NEWS TIPS newsroom@tbw.com.au NEWS EXTRA 9 EXAM STUDY TIPS n Make a study timetable and keep to it: Draw up a timetable for the next few weeks. Divide study into small chunks. Each day, concentrate only on the specifi c portions of work listed. Spread tasks out so that revision is varied, mixing challenging and easier areas. n Don’t put it off: If something unforeseen happens and goals are not met, revise the timetable and get back on track. n Do what works best for you: Discover what works best for you. Writing a summary of a particular section of work may help. Set out the summary in dot-point form to make it easy to review later. Saying the main points out loud, to a friend or family member, may help with memorising them. Crunch time for students South East schools count down to Year 12 exams PULSES are beginning to quicken for thousands of Year 12 students across the region with the realisation that Monday signals the start of South Australian Certifi cate of Education (SACE) exams. More than 13,000 students from throughout South Australia, including 3190 in country areas, will sit exams over the next fortnight with just over 1800 students to get the exam ball rolling when they put pen to paper on Monday for English studies. This year, mathematical applications is the most popular examined subject with more than 4000 South Australian students to sit the exam next Thursday. Other popular subjects include biology, mathematical studies, physical education, chemistry, physics and psychology. The fi nal two exams - Australian and international politics and musicianship - will be held on November 20. The nervousness will continue for another four weeks after the exams fi nish until the SACE results are released on December 19. Seventeen year old Tenison Woods College student Harry Walters, who is among the Year 12 students about to start their exams, said he had been putting in on average eight hours of study a day over the past four weeks to ensure he was ready for the weeks ahead. “I’ve put in the hours and I’m feeling pretty prepared for the exams,” Harry said. “I’ve tried not to leave all my study and preparation to the last moment and have maintained my studies throughout the year rather than leaving it to last minute revision.” Harry will sit four exams, physics, chemistry, biology and mathematical studies, with the aim of scoring an ATAR high enough to secure him a position studying engineering at University. “I’m nervous at the thought of exams, but I’m sure everyone is - it’s only natural,” he said. Ahead of Monday’s exams, Tenison Woods College principal, David Mezinec encouraged all students to think positively and Star Watch ARIES: (March 21 - April 20) Lucky Colour: Yellow. He said it was important for students to develop good study habits, including making and sticking to a revision schedule and setting priorities. “Students should also make sure they keep communicating with family and friends and tell them how they are going and when they need quiet time,” Mr Mezinec said. “Exams and fi nal assessment tasks are important in the life of students, but they’re not the only thing as they make up only 30pc of a student’s fi nal grade. “Keeping this perspective will help students and those around them to manage stress in the build-up to exams and assessment deadlines in the coming weeks.” n Set and answer questions: After summarising a section, ask yourself some questions about it. Alternatively, use the past examination papers on the SACE website (www.sace.sa.edu.au). Past exam papers may ask for solutions or essay-type answers. For subjects that have numerical problems, try to work with a friend and check answers against theirs. For essay questions, outline in note form how to prepare a written answer and how to construct the essay. n See what past examiners have said: Chief Assessors’ Reports from previous years are another important source of information. They give an overall picture of performance in previous years’ exams and how students performed. Chief Assessors’ Reports can be found on www.sace.sa.edu. au under the relevant subject minisite under Support Materials. n Find out about exam conditions: Copies of the front pages of the exam paper are sent to schools a few weeks before the exams. Have a look at the relevant ones. This will prepare for the exam room, knowing what it looks like, the exam duration, how many questions will be required, perhaps how many marks are allocated to each question and any other important information about exam conditions, such as whether dictionaries or calculators are allowed. n Think positively: Follow these tips, keeping up with revision schedules allow enough time for to study and staying focused shoudl help with confi dence. Think positively, be confi dent, at ease, and do your best.
