12 COMMENT TEXT YOURVIEW 0427135114 THE new logo, what a joke, reminds me of the program Egg Heads. How much do we pay these people who design stuff that makes no sense? First the new SA logo and now this rubbish. John The new logo looks uninviting and boring like the ugly grey pavers. I hope we haven’t payed a fortune for that logo. Anonymous Totally useless. It says nothing about our region. Anonymous I was so impressed with the new logo I may have to take a valium to curb my excitement. Tony Klik The logo is retro and that’s very refl ective of the dominant 1950s socio cultural attitudes ... “if it moves shoot it, if it is green chop it down”. Do I like it? No. But it does point to some sad truths about the people who shape the cultural experience of the region for both our visitors and local residents. Just look at the incredibly ugly street scapes of our major centre. To Debbie Holland. How are people meant to survive when we can’t even get a pay rise to keep up with infl ation? We continue to grow. The state continues to grow in terms of its employment growth (Hansard, 15/10/13)”. Australian Bureau of Statistics data confi rms that in trend terms, South Australia has actually lost 12,000 jobs in the last four months and in seasonally adjusted terms this fi gure is almost 18,000 jobs. Instead of addressing our dire jobs situation, Mr Weatherill simply continues to stick his head in the sand. Many South Australians, including residents in Mount Gambier, are doing it extremely tough at the moment and the premier’s answers in parliament would just be adding salt to their wounds. At the 2010 election, Labor promised to create 100,000 jobs by 2016. This means the Weatherill Labor Government must create over 3300 jobs a month to avoid breaking yet another promise. Labor has only created 67 jobs a month since making this promise - jobs are being created at a rate 50 times slower than the rate promised. Mr Weatherill can’t be trusted to manage the state’s economy, he can’t be trusted to deliver what he promises and he can’t be trusted to manage our state’s future. The people of Mount Gambier deserve a State Government with better priorities to get our state back on track. The only way to ensure we get the change of government our state desperately needs is to vote for local Liberal candidate Troy Bell on March 15 next year. Steven Marshall SA Liberals leader Bike lane creates more potential hazards I HAVE no doubt that bike riding is one of the most popular recreational activities, as pointed out by Sharon Holmes in her recent letter. However, this fact provides no justifi cation whatsoever for installing bike lanes and “no parking” restrictions along a short section of Penola Road. Most recreational bike riding is done on weekends and well away from the short section of Penola Road between the main street and the roundabout. Those who do ride recreationally during the week are invariably up early and well and truly off the road by 7.30am. I am often on that piece of road, or even parked there, between 7am and 8am and have yet to see a cyclist, be they recreational or otherwise. Even if there were bike lanes, I would fully expect most cyclists to still pick an alternate route, particularly at the busiest times, even if there were no parking between 7am and 9am and 4pm and 6pm. Despite this, there might still be the occasional recreational cyclist who wishes to take their chances along this piece of road during a week day. However, being bleary eyed, he has overslept and misreads his clock, and it is actually 4pm. After enduring a hair raising experience with dozens of B double trucks coming along Jubilee Highway or Penola Road North, our cyclist enters the new bike lane at the roundabout heading south, at the busiest time of the day. What happens when he gets to the Main Corner? If he proceeds along Bay Road, that is just as busy P c a c p p It is about time our local parliamentarian Don Pegler stood up to the city-centred bureaucrats advocating this illconsidered, unpopular, potentially dangerous proposal. Surely the monies could be saved and directed towards installing lights at the Penola Road/Wireless Road intersection. That way, everybody would be a winner. I think they will fi nd that, bike lanes or no bike lanes, most sensible cyclists would avoid that piece of road at busy times regardless. Let’s face it, there is a time and place for everything, and recreational riding up and down Penola Road, even if it were in designated bike lanes, at the busiest times of the day, is neither the time nor the place.
