Preventing suicide is everyone’s business. We all have a role to play. Suicide ? MYTHS AND FACTS A belief in myths around suicide reduces opportunities for understanding and help. Myth: People who attempt suicide are just seeking attention. Fact: People who attempt suicide are seeking help. It is more useful to view suicide attempts as help-seeking rather than attention seeking. Myth: People who talk about suicide rarely follow through. Fact: People who talk about suicide are far more likely to attempt and complete suicide than those who don’t talk about it. Myth: Asking a person about suicide will put the idea into their head. Fact: Asking a person about suicide will often reduce the anxiety surrounding the feeling and promote a breakthrough in communication. Myth: Suicide is purely a mental health issue. Fact: People who contemplate suicide are having a crisis of self. This may be related to their current mental health state or a combination of situational emotional and social factors. We do not fully understand all aspects of suicidal behaviour but we can always offer compassion and support. HOW CAN YOU HELP? ASK: take all warning signs seriously and ask directly about suicide LISTEN: encourage the person to talk and listen attentively and without judging ACT: explain your limits, seek help and involve others NEED TO TALK MORE? WARNING SIGNS Some warning signs may include: Loss of interest in hobbies, sports, work etc. Noticeable behaviour changes Mood changes, sadness, crying, changes in personality Hopelessness/helplessness Verbal clues such as “you’d be better off without me” Threats, talk of suicide or death Withdrawals from family/friends Increased use of alcohol/drugs Giving away possessions and putting affairs in order RISK FACTORS It is rare for a life situation to directly cause suicide but, it may act as a last straw. Some risk factors include: Relationship loss or diffi culty Death of someone close Financial problems Pressure to succeed Depression High expectations Alcohol/drug abuse Previous history of suicide attempts Sexual, emotional, physical abuse. ANYTHING depending on how the person feels about it A community concern A community response ONE WAY TO FIND OUT IF A PERSON IS SUICIDAL IS TO ASK IF IN DOUBT, CHECK IT OUT 632096
