NEWS TIPS newsroom@tbw.com.au NEWS 17 Students rise to challenge TESTING THE BOUNDARIES: ESTING THE BOUNDARIES: Claire Heinrich tries the thrill of abseiling during a camp in western V Schoolgirls fi nd courage on abseiling adventure STUDENTS at Allendale East Area School have enjoyed the adventure of rock climbing and abseiling at Victoria’s Mount Arapiles. Year 10 girls from the school headed to the worldrenowned rock climbing location that provides climb grades of three to 32, where they learnt about ropes, harnesses, climbing techniques and safety protocols from Adelaide instructor Wally Olenich and camped in tents. “All girls overcame differing levels of anxiety and worry, which are very normal emotions when climbing up to 20 metres off the ground and trusting strange ropes and equipment and also trusting the person below doing the belaying,” teacher Suzie Mitchell said. “Abseiling is where you lower yourself from the top of the rock and control your descent with ropes secured from the top, which requires courage and most girls attempted this with several deciding that they would have several turns. “There was lots of encouragement and celebration for those who accomplished this feat.” Despite some inclement weather, the group managed to complete all planned activities, including several walks. “I am really proud of how the girls interacted and how they individually worked through their fears and worries,” Ms Mitchell said. “It was a terrifi c four days of new experiences for all students.” TIPS newsroom@tbw.com.au NEWS 17 Students rise to challenge TESTING THE BOUNDARIES: ESTING THE BOUNDARIES: Claire Heinrich tries the thrill of abseiling during a camp in western V Schoolgirls fi nd courage on abseiling adventure STUDENTS at Allendale East Area School have enjoyed the adventure of rock climbing and abseil- ing at Victoria’s Mount Arapiles.
