NEWS TIPS newsroom@tbw.com.au NEWS 19 Comedy night raises bar for charity Leukaemia Foundation fundraiser kicks off with live show at Bellum Hotel DO SA WDY SAM sam@tbw.com.au am@ COMBINING his comedic mind and love for dance, Melbourne-based comedian Damian Callinan will kick off the Bellum Hotel’s UGLY Bartender fundraising efforts with a live act from 7.30pm on Saturday night. The comedian will present The Cave to the Rave (A Comedy Dance Lesson) as the fi rst of a string of fundraisers organised by bartender Theresa Moulden. After raising close to $6000 for the Leukaemia Foundation as part of the nation-wide UGLY Bartender Competition last year, she has put her hand up to do it all over again. The hotel has raised more than $40,000 since owners Simon Livingstone and Lisa Edwards began encouraging their bartenders to get involved a few years ago. Ms Moulden said she was looking forward to hosting a range of events in the coming month. “I had an absolute ball doing it last year and it’s for such a great cause,” she said. “All proceeds from this competition have been put towards developing the Leukaemia Foundation’s accommodation village in Adelaide, which opens next month. “For every $80 we raise, a rural or regional family can be accommodated in the village while in Adelaide for treatment. “Personally, I haven’t been touched by UNIQUE ART AUCTION: The Bellum Hotel’s Theresa Moulden and Simon Livingstone show off a piece by South East artist Jeremy Ievins, which will be auctioned off as part of a Leukaemia Foundation UGLY Bartender event on November 15. leukaemia, but I’d like to think if I was or if I knew someone who was, we would have somewhere to stay that was close to treatment.” Ms Moulden said the Bellum Hotel had been successful in raising so much money due to the support of the hotel owners and their patrons. “I have a great team behind me in order to organise fundraisers for the UGLY Bartender competition,” she said. “I enjoy being able to provide something different for the locals and they’re great at supporting us. Another highly-anticipated event is the silent art auction and Patrick of Coonawarra Mother of Pearl wine tasting at the Bellum on November 15. HAND-MADE GIFTS: Casterton’s Avril Dunn presented a stall of hand-made teddy bears and painted saws at last month’s Tarpeena Market. Market race day excitement A QUIRKY event which has become a local tradition will be held in conjunction with Sunday’s Tarpeena Market from 10am. The Tarpeena Cup will be hotly contested at about 1.30pm, with registrations for competitors taking place at the town’s memorial hall. The Tarpeena Cup has become a cherished and fun competition but, unlike most races, will feature an array of model sheep with names such as Baa Lap, Merino Diva and Baa Baa Black Caviar. The sheep are tied to a rope and lined up ready to race while their jockeys stand at the fi nish line. Competitors are required to pull their rope as fast as they can until their sheep crosses the fi nish line. Providing laughs and entertainment for competitors and spectators alike, heats for the three categories will run throughout the day as part of the new monthly market. The men’s, women’s and children’s sections have been appropriately named the ram, ewe and lamb categories. Hosted by the Tarpeena Progress Association and after a successful fi rst event last month, Sunday’s Tarpeena Market will feature more than 20 craft, produce and bric-a-brac stalls. The popular Riverland fruit stall will make its fi rst appearance at the Tarpeena Market and a swap meet will be held outside the hall, giving people the opportunity to buy, swap and sell various treasures. Live entertainment will be presented by musician Melanie Weistra during the day, setting a relaxed and familyfriendly atmosphere. Stall coordinator Libby Eykelenburg encouraged people to make a day of the festivities and take their families to the market. “We have something for everyone - mum and nanna can enjoy a coffee while browsing the craft stalls while dad and grandpa can look for something special at the swap meet and the kids can enjoy the fully-fenced playground next to the hall,” she said. “And everyone can enjoy the fun of the Tarpeena Cup.” COMPETITIONS!
