The South Australian Dairyfarmers’ Association has created its own label in a ground-breaking initiative designed to secure the future of the industry. New brand SADA Fresh is being processed and packaged in Adelaide by Parmalat under a special licensing agreement and is now on sale through Coles supermarkets across South Australia. The ground-breaking initiative will see 40 cents of the proceeds from every two-litre container sold go to a new fund being set up by SADA to fi nance projects benefi ting dairy farmers. “Our farmers have been through some pretty tough times because of low prices, poor seasons and rising production costs,” SADA president David Basham said. “The idea of the brand came about because we recognised that the industry is at a critical point in this state and we need to do something to ensure it has a future. “As an association, under law we are not allowed to distribute funds to individual members, but we can use the money to help all South Australian farmers. “By pooling the proceeds and investing it in the right projects, we believe we have the potential to generate long-term benefi ts worth many more dollars than we collect. “For example, opportunities are opening up right now for new markets and value-added products, particularly export into Asia, which have the potential to pay farmers higher premiums for their milk. “But we need resources to attract investment and make that happen.” Mr Basham said SADA was overwhelmed by the initial response to the concept. “The milk has only been on the shelves a few days and we are told it is already selling beyond expectations, so clearly consumers like the idea of being able to support a local product and local farmers,” he said. “Buying SADA Fresh gives them a very tangible way to help safeguard an industry that is vital to the state and make sure they have the choice in the future of buying quality, fresh local dairy produce.” Agriculture Minister Gail Gago and Coles chief operating offi cer John Durkan praised the SADA initiative at the offi cial launch. “SADA approached us with the suggestion of creating a regional milk brand in South Australia and now after a signifi cant amount of work by SADA, Parmalat and our buying team to fi nalise the sourcing, licensing, processing and packaging, we are delighted to sell SADA Fresh milk in more than 50 stores across the state,” Mr Durkan said. “This is a landmark day in South Australia’s dairy industry, which we hope will give dairy farmers here greater confi dence in their future. “We believe it will be popular among South Australians because we know shoppers like to buy locally-produced milk and they like to support local farmers.” Initially, two products are carrying the SADA Fresh brand - full cream and low fat milk. However SADA is considering expanding the range into other dairy products which may be licensed to other manufacturers. While the label is being sold exclusively through Coles for the fi rst 12 months, there is also potential in the future to make the brand available through other retailers. “The total amount of drinking milk sold in a year in SA is 220 million litres and we would like to hope that in the longer term we can secure one percent of the market or 2.2 million litres,” Mr Basham said. 22 OnTh eLand VISIT US ONLINE borderwatch.com.au 632497 632309 PRELIMINARY NOTICE
