44 GREYHOUND RACING Draws box one in Sunday night’s fi nal at Gawler OntheLure with DAVID LEWIS e MOUNT Gambier’s Country Cup hopes have risen following Moorak Hope drawing box one in Sunday night’s $5000 fi nal which will be run over 531 metres at Gawler. However, the local club’s other original representative, Arbour Elvis, will be scratched following an injury sustained while running in a Gold Cup heat at Gawler on Tuesday night. Fortunately, Mount Gambier will still have two representatives with the reserve runners for Sunday night’s fi nal being locally-based greyhounds Lika Gem, trained by Allen Williams, and the Tracie Price trained Oenophiliac. Moorak Hope, which turned in a top effort to defeat Lika Gem in a Country Cup heat at Tara Raceway on October 20, is owned at Moorak by long-time greyhound racing participant Allan Holmes who will be at Gawler to see his fi rst Country Cup runner. “Moorak Hope has an excellent record from box one and she now must rate as a real chance,” a delighted Compton trainer Tracie Price said after the box draw had been released. “She had a look at the track last Sunday night when running second. That was the first time she’d raced at Gawler and I thought she ran very well considering she missed the start. “It’s a long trip to Gawler and back but EVERY BIT A WINNER: Bit Berger which followed up a Horsham win last week with success at Tara Raceway last Friday. she’s pulled up a treat and I couldn’t be happier with her.” Price will be hoping for better luck on Sunday night with Moorak Hope than he had when Teddy La Plume represented Mount Gambier in the last Country Cup series in 2010. Teddy La Plume qualifi ed to represent the local track when he narrowly defeated Duel Rule before falling on the fi rst turn in the Gawler fi nal won by Aston Rachael. A disappointed Glencoe owner-trainer, Barry Shepheard, said that although Arbour Elvis’s injury was not career-threatening there was no way he would be ready to race by Sunday night. “While Arbour Elvis had won the right to represent Mount Gambier, I believe either Lika Gem or Oenophiliac, together with Moorak Hope, will be worthy representatives for our club on Sunday night,” said Shepheard, who is also secretary/treasurer of the Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club. Prize money breakdown for the fi nal, which also comprises representatives from Gawler, Strathalbyn and Port Augusta, is $3150, $900 and $450. Actually, Bit Berger’s from a litter that the pair has had some success with. By Bit Chili out of the unraced Burning Desire, she is a litter sister to Alice Shiraz and Yaranyacka which have also both won at Tara Raceway for the owner-trainer partnership. Alice Shiraz, in particular, impressed on a couple of occasions at Tara Raceway when winning over the 512 metre journey in 30.27 seconds. She should return to racing in due course following a recent whelping to Victorian sire Premier Boloney. Bit Berger’s racing career commenced in sensational fashion earlier this year at Shepparton when she won her fi rst three starts. But her form had tapered off considerably by the time she arrived at Hughes’ kennels in August. In fact, at her fi rst Mount Gambier start in mid-September she was beaten almost 14 lengths over the 400 metre journey and it did appear as though Hughes would have his work cut out with this one. “I persevered at Horsham after that run,” Hughes said. “And following our disappointment with Goddess Girl, which won two in a row recently at Tara Raceway before fracturing a fi bula at Angle Park, it was satisfying to land two wins with Bit Berger last week. “She then ran second in the 410 metre fi nal at Horsham on Tuesday. Although well beaten she picked up another $875 in prize money so it’s fair to say that we’ve experienced the highs and lows of greyhound racing over the past few weeks.”
