The fact that a maiden galloper (Shamus Award) actually got a run in the prestigious race (he was the emergency), and then went on to win it did not do a lot for our image at international level. It was anything but a vintage Cox Plate field, not helped when the hot favourite Atlantic Jewel was scratched because of injury three days before the race. Let’s face it, you do not even see maiden performers going around in country cups in this region. Shamus Award was a surprise last minute acceptor for the Cox Plate, and the fact that he had been placed in Listed and Group races in three runs from four starts this campaign helped his cause to make the cut. As one Queensland owner/race caller commented after the race, “it gives us all hope.” Shamus Award is part owned by Viv Oldfi eld of Alice Springs, brother-in-law of one of this publication’s recently retired journalists, the Conmurra based Chris Oldfi eld. New face on committee AT the AGM of the Mount Gambier Racing Club last Monday night, Tom Ellis of Coola Station was the only new face elected to the committee for the 2013-14 season. There are still four vacancies to be fi lled for anyone interested. Life membership LONG serving committeeman Ian Perryman is the latest person to join the list of life members of the Mount Gambier Racing Club. Perryman joined the committee way back in 1988 and departed the scene in 2011. He was president from May, 2005 until October, 2007 at a very diffi cult time when the club’s survival was occasionally questioned. To his absolute credit, Perryman remained strong during that time of turmoil and was instrumental in getting the club through that dark period. 46 - The Border Watch, Friday, November 1, 2013 OntheRails with DAVID GILBERT He will receive his life membership at the club’s next meeting on Sunday week, November 10. New race books gone THE new look Mount Gambier race books that were appreciated by everyone during the past 12 months are now a thing of the past. The cost of printing the smaller, pocket sized version is far greater than the larger Adelaide printed race book, and as the club is looking at every way of cutting costs with its large defi cit, the cheaper version is back in favour. The club’s general manager Allen Smith gave his fi rst report on Monday night, and was extremely positive in his expectations of a fi nancial improvement in the next 12 months. So much so that a budget for the 2013-14 season was part of the balance sheet presented. John O’Connor was returned for a third term as president with Brett Watson again the vice president. Perfect choice AT the AGM for Limestone Coast Thoroughbred Racing held recently, its business manager Paul Connell was given the nod to be the regional delegate on the South Australian Racing Clubs Council (SARCC) for its regular meetings in Adelaide. The perfect choice it was too, as nobody has his fi nger on the pulse of local racing better than Connell, who also has a strong liaison with Adelaide racing offi cials. Trots started early? YOU could have been excused for thinking that you were at a local harness race meeting at Bordertown gallops last Sunday. There in the crowd early in the day were Peter Medhurst of Glencoe, his grandson (top local driver) Jayson Finnis plus the Drury clan (Chris, Bill and David). An hour or so later, they were all smiling like cheshire cats after Painted Cloud won the opening event and Conidel the following race. Peter and Lesley Medhurst own Painted Cloud while the Drury clan are involved with Conidel, the latter the most impressive winner of the day. Nearly the perfect day IF you were part of the crowd at the Mount Gambier show and happened to watch the harness trials, then you could have recouped all or some of your show day expenses at the Horsham harness meeting on Monday afternoon. For Glencoe trainer Kevin Von Duve, it would have been the sweetest drive home as he almost had the perfect result with the two pacers he took to Horsham. Both Joolz Art and Mayorofshinetown were at double fi gure odds and driven by Terang claiming driver Timothy McLean. Joolz Art was the quickest winner of the two trials held here on Saturday night, and franked that trial form to score by a neck in the C0 pace at Horsham, paying $18.60 for the win with Tattsbet and even better in Victoria ($26.90). Later in the program, Mayorofshinetown was a 14/1 chance in the C1 pace before fi nishing second. Loves Bordertown A CHRISTIAN name of Dagmar is unusual to say the least. Silly me was under the impression it was a male name, but quickly TROTTING ALONG: Glenferrie Rustler will hit the track at Globe Derby tomorrow night. David Gilbert’s selections Morphettville (tomorrow) Race 6: No. 4, Streetcar Valour, $30 win Flemington (tomorrow) Race 2: No. 10, Melaleuca, $15 each way Rosalie Watts’ selections Flemington (tomorrow) Race 1: No. 2, Hucklebuck, $25 win Race 4: No. 1, Zoustar, $25 win Race 5: No. 6, Jet Away, $25 win Race 6: No. 8, Tips And Beers, $25 win Current balance: -$412.50 discovered on a phone call last Monday morning that Dagmar is, in fact, a female christian name. Currency Creek trainer Dagmar Klingenboeck is not a well known name in these parts but she loves heading to Bordertown. Bluepoles was her fi rst winner as a trainer at Bordertown last season, and Abluday got the chocolates at the same venue last Sunday. “I’ve only had my trainer’s licence for three years, and I gained a lot of experience working with Dennis O’Leary (Normanville) for many years. I have three horses in work at present, and they get plenty of varied work on the beach at Goolwa and track work at nearby Strathalbyn,” she commented. The chances of Klingenboeck having at least one runner on Bordertown Cup day on December 15 is extremely high considering her record at the northern track. Have saddle, will travel ANOTHER expedition for Millicent jockey Paul Marks last weekend, riding at Broken Hill on Saturday and Bordertown the following day. Two winners and two seconds from a full book of six rides was the result on the dirt at Broken Hill for our nomadic hoop. Marks won the 900 metre maiden on the Ron Daniel (Hamilton) trained Quinzel ($3.60), and the 1400 metre Benchmark handicap on Mystical Bond ($4.60) for Morphettville trainer Phillip Stokes. It was then straight in the car for the nine hour trip home to Millicent, before returning to Bordertown next day where Marks led all the way on the Jamie Opperman trained Conidel. Great value for cup day IF you don’t want any hassle having a bet on Melbourne Cup day and want a relaxing day, then I thoroughly recommend the luncheon/ afternoon at the South Gambier Football Club. It’s great value too, just $20 for an excellent two course meal (soup and main course), and bookings can be made with Bob Attiwill (8725 1977). Sue Murphy ON THE MOVE: Paul Marks was a busy man last weekend, riding in Broken Hill on Saturday and Bordertown on Sunday for two winners. VISIT US ONLINE borderwatch.com.au Third time unlucky for ‘Tut’ Gilbo THE tight, turning Moonee Valley track has been the undoing of many good gallopers over the years. It has also been a grave yard for many punters, as our guest tipster “Tut” Agnew will vouch for after last weekend. “Tut” showed bucket loads of potential in Dean Saxon his fi rst two weeks, but well and truly hit a brick wall and failed to fi nd a winner on Cox Plate weekend. So, it’s back to retirement and a bit of veteran’s tennis for the lad from Ramsay Avenue. On the other hand, our resident tipster “Gilbo” was seen doing cartwheels at Bordertown after Kyby Lady romped home on Sunday, paying the marvellous win dividend of $5.30. The weekend’s results saw “Gilbo” reduce his defi cit by $174 to be only $16 off the pace as we gallop into week 17. Possibly a fi rst this weekend with a guest tipster from Millicent and we welcome well known local identity Rosalie Watts. Rosalie is the wife of Gavin Watts who shot to fame as the trainer of the 2008 Mount Gambier Cup winner Royal Blevic. A long time employee of Boneham Cottages (21 years this month), Rosalie is well and truly a local, having been brought up in nearby Tantanoola before heading into Millicent 39 years ago. Gavin dobbed Rosalie in to become a guest tipster over a drink or six with “Gilbo” in Darwin back in August, and Rosalie never hesitated for one moment once it was known that “Tut” had failed to produce the goods. vs theguest vs the Race 6: No. 14, Surging Wave, $10 each way Race 8: No. 13 Karacatis, $10 each way Current balance: -$428.50
