SPORT NEWS TIPS sport@tbw.com.au SPORT 51 McLaughlin saddles up for charity ride WELL known sporting offi cial Bruce McLaughlin will be absent from the fi eld tomorrow as he saddles up for the Ronald McDonald House Charities Ride for Sick Kids SA. Kick-starting in Mount Gambier at the Commodore On The Park tomorrow morning, the 2013 ride will see a peloton of cyclists make a 1000km journey to Adelaide to raise money for seriously ill children in the hope of raising upwards of $150,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities SA which will go towards the further development of a Family Room at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. McLaughlin, who offi ciates for both the Western Border Football League and Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association, said his reasons for riding were due to the good cause, knowing that the Ronald McDonald House charity helps people across the country, and now having a grandchild of his own. After attending a local gym around eight years ago, McLaughlin became hooked on cycling classes which led to the purchase of a bike five years ago. Having done the 100 Mile Classic twice, McLaughlin’s love for the sport continues to grow, however cricket remains his true passion. McLaughlin has umpired football for 18 years and cricket for 10. The Ride for Sick Kids festivities begin tonight at the Commodore On The Park with a community celebration. Starting at 7pm, tickets are $60 per person or $20 for children under 12. Slotting right in GOING THE DISTANCE: Bruce McLaughlin will travel 1000 kilometres over seven days as part of the Ronald McDonald House Charities Ride for Sick Kids SA which begins in Mount Gambier tomorrow morning. MOUNT Gambier’s Luke McCallum is currently making his mark on the soccer fi eld internationally, entering the collegiate competition in the United States of America with a breeze. The former Apollo Soccer Club player recently landed a scholarship through the National Scouting Report (NSR) to attend Century College in White Bear Lake, Minnesota to further his studies and soccer career. McCallum has joined the Century College Wood Ducks competing in the National Junior College Athletic Association in the Division 3 men’s soccer category, travelling across the country for the 19 game season schedule. The Wood Ducks have welcomed McCallum with open arms by prominently featuring him in promotional material. The midfi elder has played eight games for the Wood Ducks since the season commenced, starting on the pitch for two matches and kicking one game-winning goal along the way. Spot on, Jeremy LEADING THE FLOCK: Luke McCallum (centre) has been welcomed into the Minnesota Century College ranks, prominently featuring in promotional material. HAVING made no secret of his love for fi shing and the outdoors in his award-winning “Discovered” mini-documentary as part of Hey Sport..ey Spor ... “Did ya hear about” DANGER: Buddy the hawk, just like his name sake, could soon be changing his colours. the Channel 7’s Saturday night AFL coverage, Greater Western Sydney star Jeremy Cameron has taken a step back into his life as a Dartmoor teenager during the off-season. Cameron was spotted leaving Spot On Fishing Tackle and Outdoors Mount Gambier late Wednesday afternoon, no doubt preparing to head down to a spot where the Giants’ fi rst AllAustralian in history has spent many afternoons. In addition to wetting a line, Cameron kitted up for the Dartmoor Cricket Club’s D grade side in the Butchart Shield over the weekend, snaring 4/11 and posting 10 with the willow against Allendale. Also a professed golfi ng fan, Cameron may fi nd the time to dust off the old clubs while in the region. After finishing third in the Coleman Medal and claiming the Kevin Sheedy Medal for the Giants’ best and fairest, 2014 is shaping up to be a big year for Cameron as he tackles his third season in the nation’s premier sporting competition. Demon delisted FORMER Western Border and Glenelg footballer Nathan Stark has been delisted from embattled AFL club Melbourne after being placed on the Demons’ rookie list last December. Stark was one of three delistings announced this week ahead of last night’s lodgement deadline, with Rory Taggert and James Magner also cut from the Demons’ senior list. After joining the team on its pre-season camp in Darwin shortly after his selection late last year, Stark managed just fi ve games in the VFL development league with his progress hampered due to knee, groin and ankle injuries. Endangered species ABOVE the greens at the Mount Gambier RSL Bowling Club there is a hawk tethered to keep away unwanted feathered friends. It isn’t a real hawk of course, but a plastic variant attached by cables, bobbing away majestically life-like in the breeze. The story goes, a club member and avid Hawthorn supporter, has dubbed this one particular hawk “Buddy” for reasons that need not be explained further. But with the post-AFL shuf- fl es the situation has changed and “Buddy”, in all his plastic glory, is looking somewhat in danger himself. Rumour has it, and this news comes from a reliable source, this lone hawk could soon receive a makeover. Keep your eyes peeled “Tobes”, your beloved “Buddy”, just like his name sake, could soon be resplendent in the red and white. Seniors hit the track THE Mount Gambier District Senior Athletics Club is a small group of dedicated athletes who train together twice a week to improve their fitness, learn athletic skills and enjoy each other’s company. Members are teenagers and adults ranging in age from 13 to over 60 years. Some members compete in running, throwing and jumping events, either at an occasional Masters Games event or locally as older Little Athletics members, while others are happy just to improve their skills with a group who have similar interests. The group trains each Monday and Thursday at the Mount Gambier High School from 4pm until 5.15pm and is keen to have more interested and enthusiastic participants of all ages, fi tness levels and abilities. For more information on activities and fees, please phone Linley on 8725 4511. The club is also looking for expressions of interest from volunteer coaches.
