NEWS TIPS newsroom@tbw.com.au NEWS 5 Police increase border patrols Driver screenings stepped up to combat interstate drug traffi cking SOUTH Australia Police offi cers united with their counterparts in Victoria to target drug transit routes and border crossings along the border on Thursday evening. The operation targeting the lower Limestone Coast and Victoria’s western district also involved members from the alcohol and drug testing unit and heavy vehicle enforcement section. South Australia Police issued a total of six defect notices and 17 on-the-spot fi nes. One driver was reported for drink driving and another for driving unregistered. Five drivers were detected with drugs in their system - three with methamphetamine, one with can- nabis and one with a combination of both. Police also impounded a vehicle for 28 days and issued an on-thespot fi ne for possession of a small amount of cannabis. A 46-year-old man from Portland in Victoria was arrested and charged with possessing a traffi cable quantity of cannabis. It is alleged he was found in possession of just over 2.5kg of cannabis when stopped at a drug detection point at Donovans. He has been bailed to appear in court at a later date. Police also arrested a 32-year-old man from Newtown in Victoria for driving while disqualifi ed. He was bailed to attend court at a later date. Police will continue to target drug transit routes and take action against those who possess, sell, traffi c or manufacture illicit drugs. Anyone with information about illicit drugs can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or provide information online at www. sa.crimestoppers.com.au. Riders hospitalised TWO members of the Gypsy Jokers Motorcycle Club were hospitalised following an accident during the annual poker run from Mount Gambier at the weekend. The accident occurred about 25km north-west of Portland near Mount Richmond. At around noon on Saturday, one of the riders and his pillion passenger hit a pot hole, causing them to crash. One of the men was air lifted to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne with injuries to his shoulder and leg, while the passenger was taken to Portland Base Hospital with cuts and a shoulder injury. Riders behind the 44-year-old South Australian’s bike were also caught up in the accident and three people were treated for minor injuries at the scene. Jewel owner sought MOUNT Gambier Police are trying to trace the owner of jewellery found at a residential address. Police believe the jewellery may have been stolen from another Mount Gambier home. Anyone who recognises the jewellery or can provide any information can contact Limestone Coast detectives on 8735 1005 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. WORKING HARD FOR TOURISM: Bed and breakfast operator June Kain, Koonara Wines owner/managing director Dru Reschke, Liberal candidate for Mount Gambier Troy Bell, Highbank director and winemaker Dennis Vice and Econo Lodge manager Catherine Bosley discussed tourism in the region at a forum on Thursday. Pictures: PHIL HOLMES Call for ideas to boost Limestone Coast tourism HO PH HOLMES PHIL phil@tbw.com.au hil@ COMMUNITY discontent over a lack of funding for Limestone Coast tourism promotion appears to be growing after Liberal candidate for Mount Gambier Troy Bell hosted a forum to discuss the issue on Thursday. A healthy crowd of around 30, which consisted of business owners from around the region, had their voices heard at the event. The special meeting was called amid claims the Limestone Coast was shut out of government grants for tourism. Kangaroo Island and the Barossa Valley have both received $6m in recent years, leaving many in the state’s South East in disbelief, according to Mr Bell. Disheartened by the lack of funds coming to the region, Mr Bell spoke about how tourism could be boosted and called for ideas from industry leaders. Koonara Wines owner and managing director Dru Reschke highlighted the potential for signage along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. “I think the Limestone Coast would benefi t greatly from billboards along the Great Ocean Road,” he said. “There’s a real potential there as 1.2 million people visit there every year and Port Fairy, which is not that far from here, gets 420,000 tourists a year.” He said a unifi ed push could secure more driving holiday makers in South Australia, which could be boosted through improving promotion through Victoria’s high visitor areas. JEWELLERY FOUND: Mount Gambier Police are looking for the owners of assorted jewellery. GOOD SUPPORT: Liberal candidate for Mount Gambier Troy Bell spoke about tourism at Thursday’s forum. “Driving holidays are down 25pc from past years and the South Australian Tourism Commission are looking into it,” he said. “They want to tie the driving holidays through coastal Victoria into South Australia - especially the wine growing region.” Frustration also focussed on the cost of fl ights in and out of Mount Gambier, with claims a return trip to Mount Gambier from Adelaide at the weekend cost over $500. With costs far less for motorists, stakeholders at the meeting said a push to attract driving tourists was the key to a sustainable future in tourism. Many other ideas were brought up in the meeting and Mr Bell said he was even hungrier to lobby on behalf of the region after last week’s discussion. “It’s great to have so many voices - it shows that something really needs to be done about this,” he said. “Getting together and discussing this has been a great foundation going forward. “Until the South East comes together as a cohesive group, we’ll be off the radar for funding, so this is a very healthy discussion to have going forward.” Liberal Party tourism spokesperson David Ridgway will be in Mount Gambier on November 18 and Mr Bell intends to hold another forum to coincide with the visit. “This has been very productive and with David Ridgway coming to Mount Gambier, I think we can tie it in with another forum so that the people of this region can talk about the issues we face,” Mr Bell said.
