A group from the Uniting Church at East Gambier has made Christmas puddings for the last 13 years, with volunteers ranging from under 50 to 83 years of age. The pudding recipe is a family favourite, having been handed down through at least three generations, and has certainly proven popular with the regular clientele. The puddings are sold through the church with the proceeds going to various charities or needy causes, with some of the money this year going to bushfi re relief in New South Wales. Orders are already fi lling fast and the service will be sorely missed in the region, but as the group members have aged they have now decided it is time to call it a day on the long-running activity. “We used to make the puddings at the Uniting Church where Resthaven is now,” Carlene Little said. “When they bulldozed the build- FAMILY FAVOURITE: A pudding recipe used by volunteers to make Christmas treats as a Uniting Church fundraiser has been handed down through at least three generations and is as popular today as always. Seated are Judith and Arthur Chambers with Cathy Brooksby (back left), Carlene Little, Karen Cawthorne, Rosemary Upham, Glenda Koop, Katie Moody, Helen Koop and Helen Thorn. ing we came here to Judith and Arthur’s house to make them and it’s been ideal.” The home becomes a hive of activity at pudding time with a number of urns and coppers boiling away in the backyard. “When the puddings have been boiling for about three hours we take them out and hang them on the clothesline, where they go round and round,” Carlene said. “We let them dry there for a couple of hours then we bring them in and hang them up inside.” For six days each year the group works to create the puddings and with around 50 made in the fi nal batch, Carlene said she had no idea how many they had made over the years. And while the workload is heavy, Carlene said it had been a very rewarding experience. “It has been a wonderful fellowship time for us,” she said. “We laugh and giggle and have jokes. “I am going to miss it, but there comes a time when you just have to give it up.” CLASSIFIEDS FOR ITEMS UNDER $100 (see conditions below) CLASSIFIED FORM Free
