28 TENNIS BONUS $100 COLD HARD CASH WHEN YOU CONNECT ANY HANDSET TO ANY OPTUS PLAN OVER 24 MONTHS Centrals’ success A2 GAMBIER Blue played host to Centrals in a Mount Gambier District Tennis Association contest that both teams were eager to win. Centrals men came out strong, clinching three of the four sets on offer with the match between Centrals’ Mark Heemskerk and Craig Nisbett (Gambier) being a tight contest going the way of the former, 7-5. The women’s sets were split evenly between the two clubs which gave Centrals a handy 5-3 advantage heading into the doubles ties. After losing their singles matches to Scott Hamilton and Josh Milligan the Gambier pairing of Scott Colbert and Jason Seidel turned the tables on their Centrals counterparts and recorded a strong 6-0, 6-1 win. RETURN SERVE: Aimee Marshall returns a shot in her A2 match for Centrals at the weekend. When Gambier also took the sets in the bottom women’s double 6-2, 6-3 the contest had swung into Gambier’s favour and it now led by two sets with two matches remaining. Nicole Rutkowski and Aimee Marshall showed great composure for Centrals and dispatched their Gambier rivals 6-3, 6-2 in a great display of tennis. Centrals also managed to take the sets in the top men’s double in straight sets which gave it its fi rst victory for the season 9-7. B1 CENTRALS took on the combined Uniting Church/Reidy Park outfi t at home with four changes to the team from the previous week’s loss and the orange shirts were out to redeem themselves. BACKHAND RETURN: Lisa McKenzie is a star member of Centrals’ A2 team. Basked in bright sunshine, the perfect conditions would not be able to be used as an excuse if things went sour. A good start was needed, but it was unfortunately not forthcoming as Hayley Greenfi eld and fi rst gamer. Murphy Proud both struggled to get on the scoresheet, going down 0-6 to Brittany Stark and Kara O’Neill respectively in the opening women’s singles. In contrast, the opening two men’s singles saw hard fought victories to the “old man” of the team, Paul McKenzie and future captain, Lachlan Poel. Their opponents, young guns Jack Radley and Tom Saunders made them earn their 6-4, 7-5 wins. STAR TURN: Hayley Hamilton in action for Centrals’ C grade team. 28 - The Border Watch, Tuesday, November 5, 2013 Promoted to the No. 1 position at the weekend, Emma Greenfield was unable to upstage her more fancied opponent, Brooke Weir, going down valiantly 3-6. Sam Pycroft was made to watch the day’s action after RIDING WINNERS: Former jockey, Sean Harrison is now playing pennant tennis for Centrals B2. he had no opponent to play and claimed a 6-0 forfeit. With a forfeit also the result in two of the three men’s doubles matches, the pairing of McKenzie and Poel knew they had to get a result to keep the team’s chances alive and they came away with their fi rst doubles win of the season, defeating Radley and Saunders 6-0. After struggling in their singles, the women were determined to make their opponents work hard in the doubles. And even though the results may not reflect it, 0-6 and 2-6 it was a much improved performance. The final doubles match determined the overall winner and with the prospect of the game being tied at 6-6, it was going to come down to who had won the most number of games. The combination of the Greenfield sisters have proven they are no easy beats on the doubles court and they put on a show of how tennis should be played with Hayley owning the net position and Emma’s hard hitting from the baseline. While they could not get the win over Weir and Stark (6-7), taking the match to a tiebreaker was enough to secure a two game victory for Centrals 48-46. B2 AN absolute fantastic day for playing tennis at the Mount Gambier courts where Centrals took on the home team and some encouraging results were the highlights in a day that, although was hard fought, was disappointing on the scoresheet for Centrals. Former race jockey, Sean Harrison played one of the best games of his senior career for Centrals to go down 5-7 to an equally exhausted Terms and conditions apply. But Centrals’ Regan Harris opened his account with an easy 6-1 victory against a nervous rival in his singles. Gambier’s Robert Moretti proved too strong for Steven Ruth in all his sets in what was a reality check for the youngster. Michelle Schulz had an impressive 6-0 win in her singles to give Centrals some hope and the improving Sammy Gilbertson played confidently to get a couple of games off her more experienced competitor in Belle Maduro. A special mention to Hayley Hamilton who played her fi rst round of senior tennis as a fi ll-in for a late withdrawal and she managed to win a few games and will be better for the experience. Centrals needed something special in the doubles to turn the game in its favour but Gambier held strong and won all but one set to run out 9-7 winners. Juniors - D boys MOUNT Schank, looking for its first win of the season, hosted Centrals in the D grade boys. With the singles being tied away at 2-2 it was down to who could perform best in the doubles. But the doubles were also tied, meaning a games count would determine the overall victor. After numerous counts and double checks, Centrals prevailed by the narrowest of margins, one game. C girls CENTRALS C Grade girls met West Gambier at Olympic Park and provided onlookers with some great competitive matches.
