Strong performances from Mount Gambier athletes SEVERAL members of the Mount Gambier District Athletics Club recently competed at Adelaide’s Santos Stadium in the Viv Sports State All School Games. Winning gold and silver medals enabled some of the Mount Gambier team to be eligible to enter the National All Schools Championships in Townsville next month. The Mount Gambier contingent included Isobel Redemski (Reidy Park Primary School), Olivia Dukalksis (Tenison Woods College), Casey Donehue (Grant High School), Imogen Hardacre (Mount Gambier High School), James Dukalksis (Tenison Woods College) and Shylah Fosdike (Allendale East Primary School). The team was accompanied by MGDAC coach, Robin Gorringe. For Redemski and Hardacre, it was their fi rst Athletics SA competition with both competing well after a long winter break. Redemski rang strong sprints in the Under 14 100m and 200m events, making the fi nals in both, while Hardacre com- Olivia Dukalskis jumped well in the U14 high and long jumps, winning silver medals in both and fi nishing fourth in the triple jump, while her brother James, won the gold medal in the U16 high jump and was fourth in the long jump. His mark in the high jump was a credible 1.90 metres. Donehue came home with a swag of medals, making the fi nals as an underage competitor in the U18 100m, 200m and taking out silver in the high jump (at 1.58 metres) and triple jump and a bronze medal in the long jump. Fosdike, who is a member of the Mount Gambier and District Little Athletics Centre, competed in the Under 14 age group, fi nishing 20th in the 100m as an underage runner and was impressive in the 200m, fi nishing seventh. James Dukalskis was the only member of the squad to take up the National All Schools selection for Townsville, while Donehue and Olivia Dukalskis are both unavailable due to other sporting commitments. Touch football action kicks off for summer ROUND 1 of the Mount Gambier Touch Football Association kicked off in soggy conditions at Vansittart Park last week. The inclement weather however did little to dampen the enthusiasm of players who were starved of a touch footy fi x over a long winter break. The race for the A Grade Cup, also known as the “Reg” is well and truly on. Henley Sharks showed absolutely no mercy for the newly formed Tiki Blues with a huge 19-0 win. The Sharks put on a clinical display in attack that included many highlights. None more spectacular than a diving Meg Gazzard touchdown that saw her sliding to the line from fi ve metres out. With a great mix of experience, youth and skill to burn, this team will be hard to beat this season. the MC Hammers for an 11-4 win. The reigning premiers, the Tiki Roos played a highly competitive Hornets Red outfi t. The Roos would have been regretting costly turnovers with the wet ball when Tom Dolan hit a nice gap to open the scoring for the match. The Roos fi nally began to fi nd some rhythm in attack with Dean Watson and Tristan Barr combining well to open up the Hornets’ line and post several unanswered touchdowns. The fi nal score of 8-2 was enough to see the Roos home. Jacinta Clark was standout player for the Tiki Roos defence and her teammates will need to be at their best in this week’s match-of-the-round against the Henley Sharks. The Silver Birch MF Suns have recruited well in the off season and have their eye fi rmly set on upsetting some of the more fancied teams in the competition. With some great on-fi eld leadership from Jason Brooks and the addition of Nick Moretti and Harriet Wallis, the Suns had little trouble cruising past 30 - The Border Watch, Tuesday, November 5, 2013 In the combined B/C grade pool, the likely contenders from last season’s grand fi nal both carried over strong form from six months ago. MT Blacks had a game on their hands against the Allsorts. Thomas Gibbs for Allsorts was imposing himself on the game from the outset. Zach Doidge and his right hand man, Carl Slape had other ideas though, crossing the line fi ve and three times respectively to post a winning score of 9-4. TWC Titans were quick out of the gate in their match against Try Hards in a virtual teacher versus student contest. This time however, it was the students handing out a touch footy lesson, posting an easy 10-0 win and taking bragging rights back to the Tenison schoolyard. Coach Ciaran Buckley would be well pleased with his charges’ all-round performance, but would not be too popular with his work colleagues. Better players were Will Lewis who crossed the line three times and Bonnie Edwards on the back of some good myPod Cup form. The other game of the round proved to be real arm wrestle with Vestas Vikings and Hornets Gold fighting out a 4-4 draw. David Coombe proved the difference, posting two touch downs for Vikings. Hornets though, not to be outdone, were a stubborn opponent. Judging by the cries of anguish coming from the fi eld, this game went down to the wire. The teams could not be separated at the fi nal siren and would have to be content to settle for a draw.
