SPORT NEWS TIPS sport@tbw.com.au BONUS $100 COLD HARD CASH WHEN YOU CONNECT ANY HANDSET TO ANY OPTUS PLAN OVER 24 MONTHS N.F. McDonnell Memorial DAVID LEWIS VID LEWIS ALLENDALE East greyhound Bourne Again ran right up to her heat form of last week when scoring an outstanding win in the timehonoured N.F. McDonnell Memorial at Tara Raceway on Sunday afternoon. Bourne Again had impressed in a heat win from box one but after drawing box six in the 512 metre fi nal her assignment did look somewhat tougher in what was a fi eld of quality Grade 5 greyhounds. However, the brindle daughter of Collision and Bourne Replica was able to take the lead going out of the fi rst turn and from then on she was always travelling like a winner. Bourne Again, which stopped the clock at 30.64 seconds, defeated Cool Tappin’ by 4.75 lengths with a further 1.5 lengths back to his kennelmate Colville. Owned by Connie Miller and David Peckham of the Bourne Racing Kennels, and trained by the latter, the memorial win was the second for the kennels with Bourne Ambition successful in 2007. “Barry Shepheard was actually training him for us at the time,” Peckham said. “And going back even further, to the Glenburnie days, Connie was successful in the 1991 memorial with Foxtrot Oscar.” Cool Tappin’, which gained a run in the fi nal as a reserve, ran his best race since joining trainer Allen Williams’ Tarpeena kennels in September. The black dog fi nished the race off well in second spot and looks ready to break an eightmonth losing streak while Colville turned in yet another consistent performance. Members of the McDonnell family – Margaret and Ellis Considine and Les McDonnell – were at Tara Raceway on Sunday for the race which annually honours Newman McDonnell who raced many successful greyhounds with the “Tara” prefi x. “I’m delighted at the progress the club continues to make,” Mrs Considine said when presenting an elegant Stanley Rogers cutlery set to the winning connections. “There seems to be further improvement each year we attend this meeting and the manner in which greyhound racing is conducted here is a credit to all concerned.” Bourne Racing Kennels rounded off a good day when Striking Viking was successful in the next race, the Allestree Holiday Units Stake (512m). Owned by Ross Schurgott and trained by Peckham, Striking Viking’s last win had been in late September when she defeated Bourne Again over 400 metres at Tara Raceway. And following four defeats over the 512 metre journey, the daughter of Superman and Irish Fantasy was on the top of her game on Sunday when taking over going into the back straight before racing away for a three length win over Over Rule in 30.77 seconds. The litter also includes other winners Bossanoah, Bossy Best, Fred Best and former local chaser Not Out which won 10 races. “You know, in all the time I’ve been training greyhounds today is the fi rst time I’ve ever trained a double,” a delighted Jones said. And all in all, it’s been a pretty eventual week for Jones and his wife Toni. “Rex Best won for us over 699 metres at Cranbourne on Wednesday night and then Padstow Pattie whelped two dogs and three bitches to Nitro Burst prior to today’s double.” 627149
