JACKSON TREVOR trevor@tbw.com.au ROUND 1 of the Barber Shield was completed over the weekend with some interesting results in the one-day format. South Gambier (9/147) defeated Kalangadoo (9/134) in a tighter game than many punters would have expected, Mil Lel (9/155) showed its true strength defeating Kongorong (87) and likewise Penola (7/142) defeated East Gambier (70). West Gambier defeated North Gambier last weekend. South d Kalangadoo SOUTH began the weekend as odds-on favourites against the newcomers, but that didn’t seem to deter Kalangadoo. Dave Somerfi eld (25) and Alex Henschke (26) ensured a solid start by the reigning premiers but a mid-order collapse did little for the overall total. RUN IT OUT: Nick Savage clocks up the runs for Mil Lel at Frew Park on Saturday. Pictures: KYRA SYKES However Michael Sims steadied somewhat with an impressive 40, joined by Nick Cruise with 25. Kalangadoo set about chasing down the 147-run total but Henschke put a stop to that, taking 4/22. Matthew O’Neil chipped in with 2/25 with Somerfi eld and Kieran Ashby taking a wicket each. While South’s victory doesn’t sit the reigning premiers at the head of the fi eld it is early days. Mil Lel certainly looks set to challenge and Penola seems to have the line-up to provide an entertaining season of cricket. Penola d East PENOLA’S 72-run win over East, while less than impressive overall, included another quality knock from Jase Bateman. Bateman is certainly in form with the bat and isn’t struggling to find the boundary, racking up 46 before falling to Dwayne Holman. George Kidman added 20 and Oliver March also provided some support to Bateman with 19 while Daniel Redman chipped in with 21 down the order. Holman was best with the ball for East, fi nishing with 2/21 after six overs. ON ITS WAY: Kongorong bowler Clay Leckie sends the ball back to the pitch during the game against Mil Lel on Saturday. 34 - The Border Watch, Tuesday, November 5, 2013 East could offer little in reply with the bat with Holman going for a duck, followed by Aaron Schultz soon after for a solitary run. Tom O’Connor tried to settle the ship, adding 11 and Zac Watson and Simon Golebiowski YOUNG GUN: Mil Lel’s Mark Smith was on fi re with the bat against Kongorong on Saturday with a total of 55 runs. both contributed 22 down the order. But there was little else to crow about and East looks set for a long summer. Mil Lel d Kongorong MIL Lel took to the Frew Park turf fi rst and went about setting a solid total for Kongorong to chase. The opening stance was looking strong until Tyson Currie fell to Waters for seven. Kerran Wingard offered little resistance, being run out for two before Fox took the same exit on 22. But it was Mark Smith who rallied with a solid knock of 55. Kongorong struggled and after an opening partnership of 19 from Michael Leese (11) and Tom Glynn (16) there was little other resistance. Peter Gordon chipped in down the order with 21 and Michael Waters managed 12. Justin Taylor was impressive for Mil Lel with the ball, taking 3/9 off his allotted eight overs, including fi ve maidens. Joshua Fidler was equally up to the task, fi nishing with 3/13 off eight overs with two maidens. Round 1 of the Barber Shield is set to resume on November 23 with the One Day Cup coming up on November 16. IN FORM: South Gambier bowler Matt O’Neil took 2/25 against Kalangadoo at the weekend. 627149
