FOR HOME SPORT www.borderwatch.com.au Moorak Hope wins Country Cup at Gawler DAVID LEWIS VID LEWIS SOUTH East owned and trained, Moorak Hope has struck a blow for local greyhound racing after scoring a brilliant win in the South Australian Country Cup fi nal at Gawler on Sunday. Starting as a $3.10 favourite, Moorak Hope quickly found the front from box one in the 531 metre event and was never ever headed. The daughter of Bond and Loveless Girl, Moorak Hope is owned at Moorak by Allan Holmes and trained at Compton by Tracie Price who also bred the brindle bitch. Price put in the hard yards when he made the long trip to Gawler last week and gave Moorak Hope a much needed look at the track. On her debut race at Gawler, she was slowly away from box two before fi nding her feet and eventually running home well to fi nish second. With the benefi t of a run on the track, Moorak Hope found plenty on Sunday night and never missed a beat after stepping professionally from box one. Back on the racing calendar for the fi rst time in three years, the SA Country Cup also included representatives from Gawler, Strathalbyn and Port Augusta with the winning connections collecting $3100 in prizemoney. Price rounded off a memorable night when Natural Moment was successful in the last race at Gawler. Mount Gambier’s other runner in the Country Cup was Lika Gem which gained a start when original representative, Arbour Elvis was scratched due to injury. Trained by Allen Williams at Tarpeena, Lika Gem was slow away from box two but battled on well to fi nish fourth. Williams however had better luck earlier in the day at Tara Raceway when Nifty Norris, which he races with his son David, won The Border Watch Open Maiden Stake (512m) at his fi rst local start. By Knocka Norris out of Jan’s Revenge, a winner of fi ve races at Ipswich, Nifty Norris jumped well from box fi ve and led all the way to defeat Fawn Dawn and Damonic. “I’d been looking for a Knocka Norris dog and this won bobbed up for sale,” David Williams said. “He’d raced on only four occasions and was reasonably priced so we thought he was probably worth a go. “Fair enough he’s no champion but we should be able to have a bit of fun with him. Especially if he keeps winning at $10.” Later in the day, the father and son team combined again to win the Barry’s Door Services Mixed Stake (400m) with former NSW chaser Doubles. In a busy fi nish, Doubles went to the line with a half length and neck to spare over the Michael Niele pair of Boss Osti and Osti’s Victory. By Pure Octane out of Zoom Around, Doubles is another “reasonably priced” purchase which has more than paid his way. STATE SUCCESS: Moorak trainer, Allan Holmes and his kennel star, Moorak Hope have enjoyed state success by winning the $5000 South Australian Country Cup fi nal at Gawler last Sunday.
