NEWS TIPS newsroom@tbw.com.au NEWS 5 Hospital auxiliary support improves patient care ENHANCED patient care and safety are among the benefi ts from the addition of six state-of-the-art beds to the Mount Gambier Hospital’s high dependency unit. A $70,000 donation from the Mount Gambier Hospital Auxiliary made the upgrade possible with Country Health SA South East regional director Jayne Downs thankful for the contribution. “The beds include the latest technology with new features to help further improve care for our patients,” Ms Downs said. “These include integrated weight scales so very ill patients and those hooked up to medical equipment can be weighed in bed without being moved. “Accurate and repeated weighing is vital to medication and other aspects of medical management and monitoring.” Ms Down said the beds - which are designed and manufactured by HillRom and branded under VersaCare - featured their own motorised bed mover system built into the frames, which would make it easier for staff members to move the beds while they were occupied by patients. “This will ensure smoother and easier moves for patients when they need to go to theatre, radiology or other parts of the hospital and reduce the need to manually move patients or use a bed mover machine,” Ms Downs said. “The beds have easy chair positioning at the touch of a button so patients do not have to move from the bed to a chair to sit up.” Patients can control the bed’s position with both a remote and an on-bed keypad. The beds also have a specialised pressure care surface so that patients are more comfortable and have a higher level of protection from the effects of pressure and long periods of immobility. “This is a hugely generous donation by the Mount Gambier Hospital Auxiliary and on behalf of all staff I want to thank them for their fund-raising efforts over the years,” Ms Downs said. This year marks 71 years since the Mount Gambier Hospital Auxiliary began operating. Are you aged between 18 to 25 and wanting to develop your leadership skills? MONEY WELL SPENT: Members of the Mount Gambier Hospital Auxiliary inspect one of six state-of-the-art beds which were supplied to the Mount Gambier Hospital’s high dependency unit through a $70,000 donation. Regional funds in doubt Federal Government poised to slash council allocations RDA GRANT REQUESTS M S sa MORELLO SANDRA sandra@tbw.com.au THE slashing of Regional Development Australia (RDA) funding by the Federal Government is expected to leave a number of local government projects high and dry across the Limestone Coast, according to the Shadow Minister for Infrastructure Anthony Albanese. The affected projects include the upgrade to Browns Bay near Port MacDonnell, landscaping of the former Mount Gambier Hospital site, an upgrade to recreational facilities at Millicent, refurbishment of the Naracoorte library and the redevelopment of the Robe marina precinct. It is understood Grant District Council is also yet to hear if a $750,000 grant for a marine infrastructure upgrade will be honoured. Shadow Minister for Infrastructure Anthony Albanese said Prime Minister Tony Abbott had slashed grants for community infrastructure by at least $30,000 per local council. He said the RDA grants, worth up to $2m for larger councils, were designed n Mount Gambier - $190,000. n Browns Bay - $100,000. n Wattle Range - $165,000. n Naracoorte - $190,000. n Robe - $32,000. n Doubt continues over $750,000 for Port MacDonnell. to fund community facilities like swimming pools, sporting fi elds and child care centres. “About $150m in grants under round fi ve had been approved by the previous Labor Government - each was worth at least $30,000,” Mr Albanese said. “But Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss has confi rmed the Coalition will renege on grants unless councils have already signed contracts to begin work. “This program was designed to improve community facilities in regional areas and stimulate local economies, thereby support- ing existing employment and creating new jobs.” He said Mr Abbott and Mr Truss had been in offi ce for only a few weeks, but were already destroying jobs and short-changing regions. “This is despite their pre-election promises of ‘no surprises’ and no cuts that would destroy jobs,” he said. “Whether it is a swimming pool, footy oval or a community centre upgrade, every cut hurts our community.” The RDA round fi ve grants were announced in June 2013 and funded in the 2013/14 budget. In a statement last week, Liberal Member for Barker Tony Pasin said he would meet with regional councils to work through the issue. “The previous Labor Government promised regional communities, including a number in Barker, money for local projects based on funding from their mining tax which, as we all now know, raised virtually no money,” Mr Pasin said. “I’m proud to be a member of the Coalition Government, because our $1b National Stronger Regions Fund is fully funded and accounted for as part of the budget - the funding is guaranteed. “As the national economy improves, we expect more funds will be allocated to the National Stronger Regions Fund.” MOUNT GAMBIER LIBRARY Author Event With Judy Nunn Thanks to the Get Reading program and the Mount Gambier Library, join Judy Nunn on Tuesday 19th November, 2013 at 7.00pm in City Hall, Main Corner (enter via Cave Garden) as she talks about her latest release “Elianne”; a story of wealth, power, privilege and betrayal.
