NEWS TIPS newsroom@tbw.com.au NEWS 7 Problem park space Parking tickets in South East spotlight completely black it out. M S sa MORELLO SANDRA sandra@tbw.com.au THE issue of parking infringements has again hit the spotlight in Mount Gambier following a motorist claiming she was unfairly fi ned in Percy Street in the heart of the city. Linda Millard received a $68 fi ne after parking in Percy Street on October 4 at 4.13pm, next to the new walkway that links into Commercial Street East. This is despite parking line markings still being visible and the absence of “no parking” or “no standing” signs. Since the infringement, council has painted a yellow strip along the edge of the road that clearly shows it is a now a no parking zone. Ms Millard’s son Damien Millard has publicly spoken out over the issue as a matter of “principle”, given his mother believed a parking inspector was deliberately sitting across the road waiting to nab people who parked in the dubious spot. CONFUSING: This photograph was taken on the day Linda Millard received a parking infringement notice after parking in the top space, which is adjacent the new walkway. Mr Millard - whose mother only parked for four minutes - said the park in question was clearly confusing for motor ists given the park’s outline was still visible despite unsuccessful attempts to “This appears to be a moneymaking exercise - I feel council is ripping off motorists,” said Mr Millard, who questioned how many other people had received fi nes after parking in the spot. “It is very cheeky for a parking inspector to be sitting across from that particular park, given how confusing and unclear it is.” He said he believed the specifi c park had not been offi cially changed from a park to a non-park at the time of his mother’s infringement. “The park’s lines were faded, but so are many parks across the city,” Mr Millard said. In a letter sent to council, Ms Millard said she felt “offended” by the situation. “I understand the need for change in the community, but I also believe that respect for citizens during this transition would be appreciated,” said NEWS TIPS NEWS TIPS NEWS TIPS NEWS TIPS NEWS TIPS IPS newsroom@tbw.com.au NEWS 7 Problem park space Parking tickets in South East spotlight complet newsroom@tbw.com.au NEWS 7 Problem park space Parking tickets in South East spotlight completely black it out. Ms Millard said she saw two others motorists who were also fi ned at the spot, who were clearly “upset” over the situation. But despite writing a letter to council on the issue, council has yet to budge and has refused to waive the $68 fi ne. “Even looking at your photograph it is obvious that the lines have been blacked out and you should be aware that parking adjacent to a crossing place is illegal,” council chief executive offi cer Daryl Sexton said. In the letter, he referred to Australian Road Rule 198(1), which was the reason for the park being a “no parking” area. “Council respectfully advises that the report is not waived and the outstanding amount of $68 be paid by November 6, 2013,” Mr Sexton said in the letter.
