10 NEWS EXTRA RAQUEL MUSTILLO ARMED with a metal detector and a passion for all things antique, 9-year-old South East boy Samuel Fulwood often sets out to search for historic relics to add to his ever growing collection. “I was in a paddock in Adelaide when I found a spoon,” the young adventurer said. “I later found out it was from 1790.” The exceptional discovery kindled Samuel’s passion for treasure hunting, which was highlighted at the Glencoe Woolshed 150th anniversary celebrations on Sunday. On display was an old shoe Samuel found under the fl oor of the woolshed, along with rusted shearing blades, pliers, a file and a bottle. The book is a collaborative effort between members of the Glencoe Progress Association and former members Brian Agars and Ian Ferguson and features photographs recording the lives and activities of Glencoe residents. Following the ceremony, the Pine City Twirlers and the Murcott family ensemble provided entertainment. Vintage cars, hot rods and steam engines dating as far back as 1911 provided a backdrop for a whip-cracking presentation and bagpipe performance. A barbecue lunch and refreshments were provided courtesy of Mount Gambier National Trust, with Tony Pasin sporting an apron and serving melting moments to avid customers. Glencoe Progress Association and National Trust Mount Gambier member Wendy Monger said the turn-out exceeded initial expectations. “There’s an incredible variety of activities, from the school kids, the square dancing and the quartet,” she said. “We’re very happy with the attendance of the day.” THERE’S NOTHING LIKE A SUNDAY SESSION AT THE RACES “I’ll look for things no matter where I am,” Samuel said. “You never know what you’ll fi nd when you least expect it.” His most recent dis- covery, however, is his most prized. Relying on his instinct, Samuel had the idea of hunting underneath the fl oorboards at the woolshed. Among the dust and the empty glass bottles, he saw something that caught his eye. “I found a boot, probably from one of the shearers who worked here,” Samuel said. “I’ve always wanted to fi nd a boot, so it was a dream come true.” Samuel says he would like the items to be placed in a cabinet at the woolshed. “I’m running out of space in my room and I think it’s special when items remain on display where they are found,” he said. TREASURED FIND: The treasures may not gleam, but Samuel Fulwood is proud to call these historic items found at the Glencoe Woolshed his pride and joy. He displayed his prized fi nd at the Glencoe Woolshed 150th anniversary celebrations on Sunday. With dreams of being an archaeologist, Samuel said he would one day like to work for the National Trust. “I’d like to excavate and discover previously unfound items,” he said. Samuel says he was reliant on good timing, hunches and good oldfashioned luck to fi nd his treasures. “Every once in a while, I get a feeling to look under this or that,” he said. “Sometimes I find something, other times it’s nothing, but it’s part of the treasure hunting experience all the same.” With a passion for all things ancient, Samuel lists history reading as his favourite pastime. “I love the entire world of everything that’s old - every single bit of it,” he said. “What can I say, I’m an antique lover.” MOUNT GAMBIER NOVEMBER RACING Sunday 10 November 2013 Allan Scott Glenburnie Racecourse UPCOMING MOUNT GAMBIER RACES Sun 8 December Christmas Races Sun 27 Jan Holcim Summer Cup VISIT US ONLINE borderwatch.com.au Lucky fi nd triggers archaeological interest for South East relic hunter For more information and bookings phone (08) 8725 4466 or visit mountgambierracing.com.au 10 - The Border Watch, Wednesday, November 6, 2013 632490
