The Border Watch has a double pass to the show to give away to one lucky reader. Music of the South Pacifi c THE breathtaking and lavish musical South Pacifi c will play coast to coast from Sydney and Perth with a strictly limited season in Adelaide starting later this year. Set on a tropical island during World War II, South Pacifi c is the sweeping romantic story of two couples threatened by the realities of war. Nellie (Lisa McCune) is an American nurse on a US naval base on a remote island somewhere in the Pacifi c. Emile (Teddy Tahu Rhodes) is a French plantation owner. They fall in love, but as Emile’s colourful past emerges, Nellie loses her nerve. It may be paradise, but their world is still full of prejudice and racism. The musical was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein and fi rst performed on Broadway in 1949, based on the Pulitzerwinning novel Tales of the South Pacifi c by James Michener. Throughout its 63-year history, the musical production of South Pacifi c has been performed almost continuously in theatres around the world, including Australia. The latest production of South Pacifi c is based on the Lincoln Centre Theatre version fi rst performed in New York on March 1, 2008. Acclaimed opera star Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Australia’s best loved and four time Gold Logie award-winning actress Lisa McCune head the stellar cast as Emile de Becque and Nellie Forbush. Sensational performer Christine Anu will play the role of Bloody Mary, following her highly successful appearances in the recent Brisbane season. Lisa relished her role in South Pacifi c last year and is looking forward to her return season. “The way it’s been received around the country has been fantastic,” she said. “It was especially glorious to perform at the Sydney Opera House. “That was on my bucket list. “Doing theatre is such a different discipline - sustaining a performance for three hours on stage is like a freight train that doesn’t stop ... it’s scary but I love it.” Anu had just two weeks to prepare for her debut as Bloody Mary ahead of the Brisbane season launch last December, but she relished the challenge and was a smash hit. “I have to become Bloody Mary and there is not a trace of me that anybody can see on stage,” she said. “My hair is transformed, my face is transformed, my teeth are absolutely transformed. “I love the fact I get to be someone completely different every night.” South Pacifi c, directed by Broadway dynamo Bartlett Sher, swept the 2008 Tony Awards and played to sold-out houses in New York for two and a half years before commencing a tour of the USA that continues today. A sell-out London season was followed by a UK tour, before reaching Australian shores, where it became a smash hit. The fi rst Sydney season last winter became the highest selling show ever performed at the Opera House. Starting from December 29 at the Adelaide Festival Centre, bookings can be made by contacting BASS on 131 246 or www.bass.net.au. ●One lucky The Border Watch reader stands the chance to win a double pass to see the show at 1pm on Tuesday, December 31. To go into the draw, send an email with your full name and telephone number to newsroom@ tbw.com.au by 1pm on Monday. Limited edition art collection on show A COLLECTION of limited edition prints by Adelaidebased artist Eliza Piro will be on display at Local Images Art Gallery this month. Infl uenced by the rich and colourful tapestries and textiles of India, Ms Piro’s work is bold, lively and beautiful. Predominantly focused on nature, the pieces feature elephants, birds, fi sh, fl owers and trees and have been created using a variety of vibrant colours and patterns. Through her work, trees symbolise life, while animals, particularly birds, signify freedom and peace. Combining these elements, Ms Piro’s artwork evokes feelings of optimism and joy and her favourite subjects convey messages of hope and happiness. Ms Piro’s profi le has grown considerably since 2007, when she began to be showcased regularly in galleries across Australia. Her appeal can be attributed to the fact that her artwork suits both contemporary and traditional homes, as well as businesses, providing a wide audience. An exhibition opening will be held from 5pm until 6.30pm at Local Images on Friday, November 29. The works will be on display until December 31 and the gallery is open daily from 10am until 4pm.
