VISIT US ONLINE borderwatch.com.au SEABL welcomes additional teams THE South East Australian Basketball League, in conjunction with Basketball Australia and the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence have announced two new teams will compete in the SEABL in 2014. The BA’s Centre of Excellence will fi eld teams in both the men’s and women’s SEABL competitions, but both on a reduced fi xture base. It will be a similar arrangement to 2010 when the Australian Institute of Sport had teams in the SEABL. SEABL general manager, Mark Chivers said the reduced fi xture for the new teams will allow fl exibility for the players in those squads to fulfi l international and other representative duties throughout 2014. “As was also the case when the AIS last competed in the SEABL, the wins and losses accrued by the CoE team during the 2014 season will not count towards playoff qualifi cation,” Chivers said. “Their wins and losses will be recorded and they will occupy a position on their conference ladder, but they cannot participate in the playoffs. “For opposition clubs however, the result against the CoE team will still count toward their regular season win-loss record.” Basketball Australia general manager of high performance, Steven Icke said the opportunity to participate in a competition of the quality of the SEABL will play a signifi cant role in player development. “With Basketball Australia taking carriage of the AIS basketball program at the Centre of Excellence in Canberra, we have been able to play a larger role in the direction of our elite junior development programs,” Icke said. “Participation in the SEABL competition was identi- fi ed as an element of the new program that would help accelerate athlete development. “The teams will get the crucial experience of playing in a national competition against senior opposition, in addition to experiencing the travel and time demands of life in league competition.” Chivers said the new teams would only play existing SEABL teams once throughout 2014, either home or away, unlike all other teams which play each other twice. “Their inclusion raises the number of men’s teams to 16 and women’s teams to 15,” Chivers added.
