4 NEWS Bands bang drum for musical event MOUNT Gambier City Band secretary Craig Wood is hopeful no drummers will be hurt during this Saturday’s Limestone Coast Tattoo. “In the lead up to the Eureka Stockade, a young military drummer was shot in the buttocks,” he said. “In the early settlement days of the Sydney colony, a drummer was fl ogged with the cat of nine tails for stealing a boat and attempting to escape the military regiment.” A host of drummers will participate in the event tomorrow and, despite a military focus, peaceful proceedings are expected in what has become a key community collaboration for charity. Audiences will be mesmerised with the performance of over 270 of the region’s finest musicians under the theme of “Celebrating Diversity”, including Doug Nicholls on didgeridoo celebrating the area’s indigenous heritage, Mount Gambier-based percussion group Percussion United and a band formed by Karenni people from Burma who have settled in Mount Gambier. The packed program from 4pm at the Icehouse Stadium includes military precision drills and performances by dancers and a diverse group of bands, including the city band, which won the C-grade competition of the Lions Club Mount Gambier Blue Lake Brass Band Festival during the Christmas parade. This weekend’s performance will be the last for the band behind leader drum major Carol Megaw, who will step down from the role after 25 years of service. Band members recently celebrated her achievements and also presented the Murray Johnson Band Person of the Year Award to Cindy Wright and Percy Marks Young Band Person of the Year Award to James Owen. The tattoo is held to raise funds for educational scholarships through the Stand Like Stone Foundation. Tickets are available from Chapman’s Newsagency in Mount Gambier.
