The Border Watch : December 4th 2013
Contents
The Border Watch Wednesday, December 4, 2013 And without wishing to spoil anything for Mentalist devotees, it has been confirmed Red John’s identity will be revealed. It’s a bold move for the show, especially w considering the mystery surrounding Red John has been a central part of The Mentalist since its inception, but Heller believes the series can survive and thrive once that mystery is resolved. “It felt very much to all of us like that chapter of the story was done,” he said. “Frankly, I think the great asset and value of the show is in Baker’s head and what he does. Red John was a feeling in the show and an objective. But in terms of the momentby-moment pleasures of the show, those are delivered by Simon Baker and his people, not by Red John. “It’s up to the audience to decide if they like it or not. But I think it’s going to be a great show after Red John. “I’m one of those people – when a movie g ends, I want to know what happens next. So if and when Red John is caught, we want to find out what happens to Jane and Lisbon after that because so much of Jane’s life has been defined by that hunt for Red John.” Baker acknowledges the Red John scenario could have been played out for longer, saying “there’s a lot of different ways they could have gone”. “You could have milked that whole Red John thing out but it would have been in the style of 24, where you’re picking up where you left off, and it would have been really interesting to explore that,” he said. “So we did this little dance of doing a crime- of-the-week and then bouncing back to the Red John story, and it was a difficult dance to balance those two things. “I guess it got to the point where some people were like, ‘We love the Red John episodes and we love the stand-alone episodes as well – is there a way to deal with one completely and move forward from there?’” For Baker, this central mystery has been one of his main connections to the character of Jane. “Whatever happens in the course of the Heller: “If and when Red John is caught, we want to find out what happens to Jane and Lisbon after that because so much of Jane’s life has been defined by that hunt for Red John.” series, there are reasons you sign on, and there are very important elements to the character you make a connection with immediately,” he said. “I’ve always been very invested in what my character does and how he reacts to his personal story, which is the Red John story – not so much what’s thrown at him but how he reacts and deals with it. “The most difficult part of working on this show is playing a tragic character that has a very raw and unprotected emotional side to him but has this sort of whimsical thing going on, with a sense of humour as bravado. To dance between the two tones of the show has always been very challenging.” I MONDAY DECEMBER 9 I SEVEN SA TEN SA WIN SA ABC1 SBS ONE PRIME SC TEN WIN VIC 6.00 Sunrise. (CC) 9.00 The Morning Show. The decision to seek some closure on the Red John case is one Baker welcomed, saying the upcoming storylines energised him as an actor. “These last five months working on the show have been really exciting for me,” he said. “I’ve had this sort of enthusiasm I had in the first season because it’s new and fresh from week to week and it’s going somewhere.” But just where is it going? Heller speculates that “if and when Jane catches Red John” – he’s playing his cards close to his chest here – it will be a game-changer for The Mentalist and its characters. “As time rolls on, rather than them changing, life is changing, the world around them is changing, and they ge too ng, the d them n n have to change too th nd they g he said. “And that puts them in a differ relationship with each d. hat puts different other,” he said.
