Enemy within Understanding follows rebellion K B B P KEEPING THE FAITH BAKER KE BA PHIL By Pastor PH By “MY dad never got any brains until I turned 30,” a friend in Tasmania once told me. How true - we reckon we know it all - certainly more than our dads. Then came the time when we realised he was right all along. We vow and declare never to be like our dads (or mums) and then with the passing of time we realise we’ve been like them all along. And mostly we realise that’s not such a bad thing. It’s often discovered as a result of moving away from home and restrictions placed on us by family. There seems to be something in human nature when we discover that a thing is prohibited. Something within us comes to life and desires it to the extent we either simmer along in silent, passive opposition or explode in open rebellion. A wise parent, up to a point, will let us have what we want until we discover that we didn’t really want it after all. That not only was it offensive to parents, but it was actually harmful to us. Ultimately when we left home, we had our fl ing with these things and the majority of us discovered that mum or dad or both were right. Something like that goes on in the way people relate to Almighty God. We instinctively know about God, but ignore Him and don’t honour or thank Him. So (the Bible teaches us) God lets us go our own way to do what we want. You’ll fi nd in the fi rst three chapters of the book of Romans in the New Testament some of the things that God gives us over to - it’s not pretty. “Misery loves company,” despite knowing the harm these things can do because we encourage others to do them too. How many things has our society wanted and got in recent years, only to discover we didn’t really want them at all? Here’s a few: •We wanted sex, drugs and rock and roll in the ‘60s and we got it, but the fi rst two never gave the freedom they promised. •We wanted no-fault divorce in the ‘70s and have reaped chaos in family life and damaged children. •We wanted freedom to publish and consume pornography - see today the addiction that causes and the damage it has done to relationships and countless lives. •We wanted abortion and we got it to the point where it has been described as a national tragedy and very few politicians are game to tackle it. The issues our nation and community faces are beyond our ability to control. “We have met the enemy and he is us.” All of us have sinned and fallen short of the glory God intended for us. We have rejected it because we like what pushes the boundaries, what’s naughty and daring - and have a desperate fear of being boring. The good news is that when we come to the realisation that God was right all along, He warmly welcomes us, forgives us and restores us to peace and friendship with Him again. Talk to a believer about it now. Lots of people have discovered the truth of this for themselves. And you don’t have to wait until you turn 30, 40 ... or whenever.
