NEWS TIPS newsroom@tbw.com.au Burwood hit with dramatic downturn Fallout continues from OJD test saga IAN TURNER IAN and Julie Pfeiffer and family have been put through a huge emotional and fi nancial wringer for the last three months, which culminated in their fi nal fl ock ram sale on Friday. The well-documented saga of their battle over a false Ovine Johnes test result saw the fi nal stage of their dispersal delayed for two months and produce a disappointing, yet understandable result. Without consideration of the emotional turmoil the family has suffered, the fl ock ram phase of their dispersal presented clear evidence of the economic impact. The 17 registered buyers who turned up to purchase a wonderful quality line-up of 76 White Suffolk and eight Suffolk fl ock rams need to be congratulated on their patience and loyalty to the Pfeiffer family. They included several longterm clients and in particular Andrew Kebbell at Attunga at Flaxley and his buying agent John Kemp of John Kemp Livestock, Summertown. Andrew is Burwood’s longest-serving client and he purchased three rams to $800 at the sale. PD and JL Harris of Nhill was the number one registered buyer and purchased lot one for $1000, later adding two more White Suffolks and one of the three Suffolks that sold. Landmark Bordertown was the selling agents with Malcolm Scroop auctioneering, while local branch member Graeme Hampel connected to Garvald Vale Partners of Hamilton to provide the volume buying. They paid to $1000 in purchasing 13 outstanding rams at an average of just $538. Considering these were some of the elite performance rams in the draft with a Lambplan Carcase Plus index average of 193.2, the purchases were outstanding value. Kevin Francis of Western Flat purchased six rams, all at $500, while D and J Wagenknecht of Bordertown, WJ Langley and ALL OVER: Duncan Young of Balhannah, Mary Burzacott of Robe and Mark Grossman of Angaston celebrate with members of the Pfeiffer family, Ian and Julie and their children Nikki Ward (holding son Harry), Casey Work, and Shane Pfeiffer after the Burwood fi nal stage stud dispersal. MOUNT GAMBIER STORE SALE 3000 CATTLE 3000 Friday 13th December, 2013 at 11am (SA Time) STEERS END OF AN ERA: Landmark auctioneer Malcolm Scroop, Landmark Bordertown’s Graeme Hampel, the volume buyer with 13 rams for Garvald Vale Partners of Hamilton, Andrew Kebbell of Attunga at Flaxley, who is Burwood’s longest-serving client, his buying agent John Kemp of Summertown, Burwood principal Ian Pfeiffer and Darryl Grosser of Serviceton with the $1400 top priced ram at the fi nal phase of the Burwood White Suffolk and Suffolk studs dispersal. Sons of Bordertown, AC Day and Sons of Western Flat and M and R Dahlitz of Bordertown all purchased four rams each. Top price honours went to Darryl Grosser of Serviceton, who paid $1400 to purchase Burwood 122509, an Anden SALE SUMMARY 2013 weight EBV of 18.1, a Pfat EBV of -1.2, a Pemd EBV of 0.8, culminating in a Carcase Plus index of 205, he was a stand-out selection for the purpose. 2012 Offered 84 133 Sold 56 107 Top $1400 $2000 Average $584 $882 090206 son for his stud fl ock. Having missed out on one of the 10 White Suffolk stud rams from the stud section of the dispersal held the previous day, he picked up a more than suitable quality ram. With a huge post weaning EXCELLENT CONDITION Held two months later than originally planned and with an offering described by stud principal Ian Pfeiffer as clearly the best quality fl ock ram draft he had ever offered, the lateness and stigma associated with the false positive had a devastating effect. Numbers cleared were down 48pc, the top price was down 30pc, the average price was down 34pc and the number of buyers registering was down 68pc. Without the extra added feeding costs for two months, plus the lost private sale opportunities for the extra 100 plus rams that could have been sold over this time and are still available, the sale gross was down $61,700 just on flock rams.
