SINGLE STROKE WINNERS: Grade winner at the Mount Gambier Golf Club last weekend included (from left) Libby Furner (C), Chris Galpin (B) and Diann Norman (A). Solid win for Galpin IN extremely changeable weather conditions, 40 women played an 18-hole single stroke competition – sponsored by the Comfort Inn and Silver Birch Motels – at Mount Gambier’s Attamurra course last Wednesday. Course conditions were good and it was not surprising to see fi ve players reduce their handicaps. The best nett came from B grader Chris Galpin who fi red 96-26-70 and her card featured three pars and a birdie on her outward 9-holes. The more difficult homeward nine proved trickier but another par and a birdie set her up for her 4-under par handicap score. Just two shots back were Lois Harvey and Marilyn Spencer, separated in that order by countback. A grade proved to be a two-way tussle for first place when Di Norman nudged out Julie Oldfi eld in a countback after both players carded 72 nett, four strokes ahead of their nearest challenger, Mel Bawden. Norman’s round of 92-20-72 included 9-hole sectional breaks of 47 and 45, while Oldfi eld posted nines of 39-43 for her excellent round. The good scores kept coming in the C grade ranks with Libby Furner playing consistently with a nett 73 in a round that included pars on the 13th and 18th holes. Heather Hadnum scored 76 nett to claim second place in a countback from Maureen Howe. In the corresponding 9-hole competition, Jennette Braun signed for a nett 30, which is a particularly low score for the 42 handicapper, although that mark has since been reduced to 40. Gloria Lennon was in second place with a nett 43, while nearest the pin prizes were won by Yvonne Shirley, Marilyn Spencer and Karen Forster. Coming events Today: 18-hole single par. Ph 8725 2404 Gordon Bignell topped the leaderboard when he won both the medal and B grade, shooting 83-16-67 and had a two shot buffer from the in-form Daryl Taylor on 85-16-69. In A grade, Mike Smith was the winner, scoring 38 on the outward 9-holes to complement his 79-12-67. Second home in A grade was Joel Mann who also played under his handicap to fi nish with 75-6-69. Nathan Taylor won C grade after coming home strongly to score 104-34-70, but then had to survive a countback from Anthony Sumner on 92-22-70. Millicent Golf Club visitor, Martin Cameron was among the 20 golf ball competition winners who shot 74 or better. Pro shots were won by Craig Foster and Jason Shanks on the 8th and 16th holes respectively and nearest the pin winners included Jason Shanks (A grade) and Mike Griffi ths (C). Birdie ball competition winners were Setio Shanahan, Peter Crow, Tim MacLean, Peter Waters, Martin Cameron, Craig Foster, David Harris and Nick Black. In a fi eld of 16 women, Leanne Bain carried on from the previous week to win the stroke round convincingly with 108-44-64 from Faye Mainwaring who also played steady golf with 88-16-72. Bain has reduced her handicap again by two strokes with her excellent round. Ball competition winners included Faye Mainwaring, Penne Saffi n, Karen Forster, Lois Harvey, Yvonne Shirley and Lyn Hudson. The pro shot on the 8th was won by Heather Barry and Lyn Hudson was the most accurate on the 16th. This Saturday’s competition will be an 18-hole stableford. Thursday’s stableford WITH the fairways running last Thursday, excellent scores ensued in the men’s stableford competition. In a fi eld of 71 players, Chris Dawes – after winning with 45 points the previous week – went one better and posted 46. Caleb Perry claimed second place in a a countback from Brian Norman after both shot 43 points. Others to score well included Chris Ryan with 42 and Barry Buchanan and Graham Allen both on 40. There were 13 ball competition winners who scored 36 points or better while Graham Thomas’ birdie rewarded him with the pro shot on the 8th hole. The 16th hole award went to TAP-IN PUTT: Ben Robinson fi nishes off his handiwork on the putting green. Caleb Perry while the list of birdie ball winners included Ross Bond (x2), Caleb Perry (x2), Graham Greenwood, Michael Evans, Nick Black, Greg Hudson, and Peter Dempsey. Members’ luck draw JACKPOT has increased to $400 which will be drawn between 6pm and 7pm this Friday. Members are advised that counter meals will not be available this week due to a pre-booked private function. WIN TV 9 for $9 competition HIGH scores kept the handicapper busy in the WIN TV 9 for $9 competition last Wednesday. Jake Dempsey won the mem- bers’ section with 25 points from Jarrod Stocker on 24 who in turn fi nished in front of Richard Evans, Doug Robbins, Jason Mann and Heath Sims all 21 and Jamie O’Neil on 20. In the visitors’ fi eld, Joel Raneberg top scored with 28 points to win from Sam Shaw 27, Mick Mullan 23 and Hayden Wagstaff 23. SEEMS-Ryans Golf Skins Challenge – Round 2 THE second round was played last Sunday with 21 members in the fi eld, including fi ve new players. Sponsored by South East Education and Mentoring Solutions, Ryans Lawyers, Carlin and Gazzard and South East Conveyers, the event is creating interest and there is only one more qualifying round – on January 12 – before the fi nal playoff on 2 February. Trent Eitzen won a box of golf balls for nearest the pin on the 8th hole last weekend. MGGC Men’s Handicap Matchplay Championships PLAYERS who are drawn in the fi rst round must have their matches completed by next Sunday. The draw is on the noticeboard in the Attamurra clubhouse. Extra competitions THE MGGC has introduced a new nine-hole competition which will be played each Saturday afternoon with tee-off times available from 1.30pm onwards. A new 18-hole competition has also been added to the MGGC calendar. This event will be played on Sunday’s from 8am onwards. Entry fees for both competitions can be paid at the pro shop. For more information on either event contact the MGGC pro shop on 8725-1619. Christmas draw and raffl e THE draw for the “Golf, Grange and Greenbacks” raffle will be conducted on December 20 between 6pm and 7pm. Meals will be available and there will also be entertainment for children.
