46 SPORT Prestigious baseball shield up for grabs THE annual Taylor-Probert Shield will be up for grabs tomorrow night when Federal and Centrals meet in Round 10 of the Mount Gambier District Baseball League Division 1 roster. Federal and Centrals have been playing for the shield since 2001 with honours relatively even. The shield was instigated by Federal’s Peter Taylor in 2001 to honour two lifelong mates, his father Frank Taylor and Centrals’ Al Probert. Taylor and Probert had been associated since they were youngsters in school when they were keen sportsmen on the baseball fi eld. Frank Taylor’s baseball life began when he joined Federal in 1949 so when Probert fi rst picked up a bat and glove for Central in 1958 a long history of friendly rivalry began. A life member of Centrals since 1969, Probert – who played over 150 games for Central and Mount Gambier – was a member of a big baseball family including brothers Daryl, Trevor and Rodney, his son John and his grandchildren David and Bryce who have all graced the local baseball fi elds. Taylor was recognised for his loyalty and love of the sport by being awarded life membership to Federal over 25 years ago and passed his love of the sport down to his family. Sons Daryl and Peter, grand- son’s Ashley Clover and Nathan Taylor – who will be playing in his fi rst Taylor-Probert Shield game – and step-grandson Mathew Fenwick have all played for the club over a period of time while daughter, Cheryl is a past treasurer of Federal. Frank Taylor and Al Probert participated in many Victorian Provincial Baseball League Carnivals together as teammates in the Mount Gambier representative team, a particular highlight being when the team won the Division 1 championship in Dandenong in 1965. Unfortunately neither will be around to witness this year’s clash as Al Probert passed away late in 2011 while Frank Taylor passed away earlier this year. With their fi erce competitiveness and love of the game and in honour of these two great ambassadors for local baseball, MGDBL offi cials are looking forward to seeing a big crowd witness what is sure to be a superb contest. The Federal v Central Division 1 game is scheduled for a 7pm start, while the other highlight match in the MGDBL this weekend is the Tigers v South match at 4pm. Round 9 results – Division 1: Federal 10 d Central 1; Tigers 18 d South Indians 0. We need everyone’s help to buy aircraft and keep the ROYAL FLYING DOCTOR fl ying. VISIT US ONLINE borderwatch.com.au WBFL takes right turn with Clyde From back page “The VCFL may have got their way with their preferred competition structure, but it did little for the Western Border.” One of Mr Lawrence’s immediate aims is to implement a playing roster that is suitable for players, clubs and the paying customer. The 2013 roster, which included a shortened 15 rounds and four fi nals matches still took 23 weeks from start to fi nish and the numerous breaks for split rounds, long weekends, SA country championships, infuriated and frustrated most personnel involved with the WBFL. The new-look WBFL executive and the six member clubs will meet in Mount Gambier on Monday night to ratify the 2014 roster. “We (executive) have offered the clubs three different scenarios of a roster including 16, 17 and/or 18 rounds,” Mr Lawrence said. “The roster includes the traditional South v North Anzac Day game, some night matches and we haven’t exactly ruled out a Good Friday fi xture. “Personally I’m leaning towards the 17 round roster, but it will obviously depend on what suits the clubs best. “I see my role as ensuring the Western Border is run successfully off the fi eld, while on fi eld matters should take care of itself.” Mr Lawrence also confi rmed that the WBFL had locked in a three way interleague weekend with the Mid South East and Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara leagues. While a venue/s have yet to be announced, the round robin carnival will almost certainly be played over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June. Despite the WBFL announcing an $11,000 trading loss for 2013, extenuating circumstances – highlighted by the loss of three clubs – led to that defi cit. “Financially the Western Border is travelling okay and it’s all about good governance,” Mr Lawrence said. “In David Heard we have a good chief executive offi cer and with fellow board members, Bill Downs, Des Beaton, Dot Sheridan, Bronwyn McCallum and Trevor Smart, our member clubs can have confidence for what lies ahead.” Mr Lawrence also confi rmed that there is a vacancy for one more executive to join his panel for next season.
