48 GREYHOUND RACING OntheLure with DAVID LEWIS e THE Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club is hoping 600 metre racing will be up and running at Tara Raceway in time for its cup carnival in March. The new distance will complement the standard 400 metre and 512 metre races already run on a weekly basis and offers owners and trainers a further option for their greyhounds. With Greyhound Racing Victoria donating a set of starting boxes, MGGRC secretary/treasurer, Barry Shepheard, said this week that there would be minimal set-up costs for the new distance. “The boxes are currently being used at the Ballarat track but providing we can get them over fairly soon then we should be able to be racing over 600 metres by cup time,” Shepheard said. “Obviously the starting boxes are where the main cost is involved so the club felt it was too good an opportunity to pass up. “Just how much demand in the short term there will be for 600 metre racing remains to be seen but long term we believe greyhound racing at Tara Raceway will be all the better with another distance option.” These days, many tracks Australia-wide are running 600 metre events with the once-popular “half mile” races now struggling to attract owner and trainer support. And this has also been the case at Tara Raceway where only a handful of 732 metre small-fi eld races have been run this year, the most recent being almost three months ago. Humphrey back just in time WORROLONG trainer Lee Bartholomew was happy enough with Just Humphrey’s return to racing at Tara Raceway on Sunday. Especially as it had been the fi rst start for the son of Cosmic Rumble and Elite Touch in a couple of months following some complications with his tail. Just Humphrey chased home Your A Wally to run second in the Allestree Holiday Units Free For IN LINE FOR HONOURS: Just Humphrey, trained by Lee Bartholomew is the current leader in the Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club’s Greyhound-of-the-Year award. All (400m) and in doing so picked up a couple of valuable Greyhound-ofthe-Year points. Very valuable as it turned out because, surprisingly, he was unable to gain a start at this Sunday’s meeting. “He’s a grade one over the 400 metre distance and Sunday’s main short VISIT US ONLINE borderwatch.com.au Club to go the extra distance at Tara course race has been graded as a mixed 3/4/5 with the result being he’s ineligible,” a disappointed Bartholomew said. “And he certainly wasn’t ready for the Christmas Cup over 512 metres.” Just Humphrey has now shot four points clear of litter sister Azumi Touch which is trained by Steve Bartholomew, Lee’s husband. Azumi Touch is running on Sunday, so one way or another, the husband and wife team now appears more than likely to pick up their third GOTY award following So Gentle and Worrolong’s successes back in the early 2000s. However, the ideal scenario would be for Azumi Touch to win on Sunday and then for the pair to go into the fi nal meeting on December 22 – probably in the same race – on level points. Boost for popular trainer POPULAR Portland trainer Ray Keating was back at the track last Sunday following a few health issues. Not that Keating minds. Remonstrate was an impressive maiden winner at Tara Raceway last month over 400 metres and he impressed again last Sunday when clocking a smart 23.43 seconds.
