Mount Gambier ready for party of the year KEN BR brett@ KENNEDY BRETT brett@tbw.com.au PLANS for Mount Gambier’s fourth annual community New Year’s Eve celebrations have been unveiled with a diverse range of entertainment set to draw a crowd to Vansittart Park on December 31. Organised by Mount Gambier Community Events Management Inc (MGCEM), the end-of-year event is set to offer more value than ever with an increase in attractions and activities. Under the recently upgraded Vansittart Park lighting towers, the ever-popular Riot City Wrestlers will return to ignite the crowd with their hard-hitting performance. In a coup for the MGCEM, Adelaide-based band Platinum Plus - which features former radio personality and AFL player Barry Ion - will venture down south to headline a list of talented local acts. “This is the fi rst time we have sought out a bigger act from away, so we are interested to see how it is received,” MGCEM committee member Maree Thompson said. “They are very popular amongst the Adelaide live music scene. “You’ve got to try something different to keep the crowds happy. “We have the whole spectrum of ages covered as far as entertainment goes.” Streamlyne, the Mayfair Singers, The Sweet Sensation, Katie Slattery, Circus Elements and the RSL Blue Lake Highland Pipe Band make up a talented and diverse contingent of local acts set to captivate audiences throughout the night. Riddoch Art Gallery Exhibitions • 1 Bay Rd. Gallery opening times: Mon - Fri 10:00am -5:00 pm Sat & Sun 11:00 am-3:00 pm. Closed Public Holidays • Annette Bezor : Iconic Works 1997-2013, on display until Sunday 19 January 2014 • TAFE SA End of Year Exhibition, on display until 26 January 2014 COMMUNITY Thursday, 19 December 2013 BACK IN THE RING: A favourite amongst past New Year’s Eve crowds, Riot City Wrestling will again return to Vansittart Park to entertain with their high impact show. Ms Thompson said the committee would also add to the children’s activities this year. Entertainment includes go-karts, a bungy run, bucking bull, giant slide, jumping castles, circus activities, merry-go-round, kids gym, giant games, a sandpit and face-painting. Organisers have also teamed up with the Mount Gambier Library to add incentive for children to visit the painting tent, with completed works set to be displayed in the library following the event as part of a fundraiser for the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. The new year will be ushered in with a bang thanks to two fi reworks displays, one at 9.15pm and the other at midnight. Planning began for this year’s festivities in January when the small MGCEM committee met just weeks after its previous event. “Sponsorship is down, but we are still defi nitely going ahead,” Ms Thompson said, thanking the current sponsors for their support. With the committee working hard to ensure ticket prices are kept feasible, family passes will be available for $30, adult tickets are $10 and social card holders or children over the age of 15 will be able to enter for $5. “The community support has been really good over the years,” Ms Thompson said. “We hope that support will continue again this year. “It’s hard to get funding and there seems to be a perception that there are few costs involved. “Everything needs to be paid for.” Ms Thompson promised a diverse range of food would be available on the night, with traders registering to be a part of the event. This year’s Mount Gambier New Year’s Eve celebrations are sponsored by the City of Mount Gambier, Grant District Council, ac.care, First Super, Gambier Print, The Border Watch, Win TV, K&S, UFS Chemist, Henri Post Jewellers, KFC, GEBD, Kimberly Clark Australia and the North Gambier Sportsmen’s Club.
