Jim and Viv Maher have been long-time supporters of the ALP, both beginning their affi liation in the late 1960s, and their dedication was rewarded as they took home two of the possible three annual life memberships awarded. Federal Labor deputy leader Tanya Plibersek and South Australian premier Jay Weatherill made the presentations at the political party’s state conference earlier this year. “I don’t think they have recorded a time where two country people have received it in the one year - normally it is given to two people from the city,” Viv said. $798420 LITRE FROST FREE FRIDGE Special Offers are for a Limited Time Only - Sale Ends Jan 5th 2014 “There certainly hasn’t been a husband and wife receive it together.” The duo’s achievement was celebrated by dignitaries, peers and friends alike, as well as some special guests. 73 Commercial Street East, Mount Gambier. Phone (08) 8725 7800 4 - The Border Watch, Friday, December 27, 2013 “Our five grandchildren were there, so that was pretty special,” Viv said. The Maher family connection with Labor has only strengthened in recent years with son Kyam currently serving as a member of the Legislative Council. “We’ve had lively debates with our three sons about what Labor and politics is all about,” Viv said. “It’s been a joy to see all three of them grow up and take on their own social responsibilities.” For Viv, life membership was a proud moment. “For me it is recognising the time you have given to a cause you really believe in,” she said. “I was particularly happy to be able to share this with Jim.” Meanwhile Jim, a serving member of Mount Gambier City Council, was humbled by the accolade. “I didn’t think we were old enough,” Jim joked “Politicians and political parties should be important in the sense of what their values are, as opposed to the political process. “In a way I’d like to think this is recognition that I’ve upheld the values I hold in high regard.” Having both held various positions within the party over the years - with Jim serving as the current Mount Gambier sub-branch president - the Mahers have been strong supporters and advocates for the Labor way locally, despite the party’s popularity in the region taking a hit in recent years with the sell-off of harvest rights for ForestrySA plantations. “It’s hugely important to say to the community at large that it’s alright to support the Labor values,” Jim said. “We have both stood for the state seat, not necessarily with the intention of being selected, but on behalf of those who uphold the values and to show them that you should be able to.” The Mahers involvement within the community has gone far beyond the political boundaries. Jim is a past president of the Mount Gambier Basketball Association, while Viv is heavily involved in social work throughout the region. Both have also been supporters of tertiary education in Mount Gambier through advocating and working at TAFE SA. “There is that real sense of making an impact in your community,” Jim said. “That’s all you can hope to achieve.” mbier - Ph. 8725 2565 22 C 637087 637404 622837 Hurry in for RED HOT DEALS VERY LIMITED TIME VERY VERY IN STORE ONLY BONUS 7” WIFI TABLET DON’T MISS OUT $200 SAVE
