28 GREYHOUND RACING OntheLure with DAVID LEWIS e GREYHOUNDS will race for record prizemoney in this year’s timehonoured Mount Gambier Cup. To be run over 512 metres, heats of the cup will be conducted on Sunday, March 2 at Tara Raceway with the $7000 fi nal a week later. Greyhounds will race for normal prizemoney ($545, $160, $80) in the heats with the fi nal breakdown being $5000, $1400, $600 – a signifi cant increase on last year’s event. And with the final to be run on a Sunday, Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club secretary/ treasurer, Barry Shepheard, is predicting a big crowd will be on track to witness the club’s major meeting of the year. “Last year’s cup fi nal was run on a Friday and this did impact on attendance,” he said. “However, with the 2014 fi nal to be conducted on a Sunday, on-course atmosphere should be considerably enhanced. “Weekend racing, added prizemoney and a strong supporting feature program to complement the cup should ensure we have strong outside interest for the carnival,” he said. This year’s carnival will actually be run over three consecutive Sunday afternoons with heats of a feature 512 metre $1500 maiden being run on February 23 and the fi nal on March 9. They had been keen to breed with her and David Brodhurst eventually came up with the little known sire Galba Jack. “He had a good race record and I liked his breeding,” Brodhurst said. “Anyway, we kept in touch with Galba Jack’s connections who later were looking to move the dog on after he struggled to gain mainstream support in the highly competitive stud dog business. “Being more than happy with our Cash Strapped pups we said we’d give him a home at Serviceton. After all, who knows where it might lead?” SECOND CHANCE: Former top class chaser, Galba Jack – pictured in action at The Meadows – is now based at Serviceton with Valerie and David Brodhurst. run in conjunction with the cup fi nal on March 9 will be a $2000 distance event over 732 metres and a 400 metre sprint carrying $1500. The Mount Gambier Cup, which was fi rst run in 1981 at the original Glenburnie track, was won by the Newman McDonnell trained Tara Topar. Thirty-three years later the name “Tara” is still synonymous with greyhound racing in the South-East. The fi nal cup run at Glenburnie was in 1996 when it was won by Col Sims’ grand little front runner Colin Ian. And 18 years later the name Sims is also still synonymous with local greyhound racing with heats of the Val and Col Sims Maiden Memorial to be run on Friday, January 17. The following year Ralph Patzel won the fi rst cup conducted at the Lake Terrace East venue with Ashanti Gem, while another local identity in Allen Williams, after 30 years of trying, was successful last year with Colville. And you don’t fi nish second to Dyna Lachlan in an Australian Cup unless you can run a bit. Or run second to Dee Winter in a Traralgon Cup. Or make the fi nal of a Ballarat Cup. Or win almost $120,000. Galba Jack is beautifully bred, being by Collide (Brett Lee x Rumble Spirit) out of Private Affair (Malawi’s Prince x Angel Affair). There’s actually plenty of Malawi’s Prince in the Cash Strapped pups with Rumble Spirit also being by him and Black Enforcer a grandson. So Galba Jack has been given a second chance in the most unlikely of places. A second chance, mind you, that is well deserved. Because, make no mistake, Galba Jack was a seriously good greyhound.
