The Border Watch : January 23rd 2014
FOR HOME SPORT www.borderwatch.com.au PORT Can Lines claim a second title? MORRIS ROD firstname.lastname@example.org NO pressure, just stay upright for 30 laps, drive quicker than everyone else and collect $10,000. Pretty simple really when it's put in a nutshell like that. Reality however is: winning the King's Sprintcar Challenge is no easy task. Never has been, never will be...and nor should it. Billed as being in its 19th year, the King's Challenge actually originated in 1995, meaning the 2014 edition will be the 20th running, although both 1996 and 2009 were wash outs. The new look Borderline Speedway Club committee which consists of Bill Barrows (president), Cary Jennings (vice-president), Kerry Hill (secretary), John Ferguson (treasurer), Steve Rice, Joe Aston, Christopher Stockwell, Terry Clarke and Leigh Thorne have worked hard to make all events at Borderline – not just the King's Challenge – classed as feature races. But the King's Challenge with a winner's purse of $10,000 does place it at the pointy end of races on the club’s calendar. In the previous years of the King’s Challenge there have only been 10 individual champions despite the fact hundreds of drivers have contested the event. Three of those are multiple winners, American Donny Schatz (2000, 2002, 2003 ad 2005), Queensland's Robbie Farr (2006, 2008, 2010 and 2013) and another American, Darryn Pittman (2004 and 2007). To be raced tonight, there is only one driver in the record field of 72 starters who will have the chance to join Schatz, Farr and Pittman as a multiple champion, Mount Gambier's very own Steve Lines. The 26-year-old, who drives for the Halls Motorsport and Haulage team has been in peak form throughout the 2013-14 summer season to date. From 20 starts, Lines has qualified for no less than 17 A-Main finals and won nine of them, a winning strikerate of 52.94pc!
