6 NEWS True colours on show at celebration COLOURFUL fl ags, good food and music will mark the celebration of what is great about being Australian in the Cave Gardens this weekend. Performers will set the tone for the serving of the Australia Day breakfast at 7.30 am in the Cave Gardens on Sunday, followed by an awards ceremony at 9.15am. Mount Gambier City Council will recognise citizens of the year Bruce Ridland, Sue Parkinson, Ross Parkinson and Allan Dowdell, while Claudia Bailey will receive the young citizen of the year award and the inaugural Limestone Coast Symphony Orchestra concert will be celebrated as the community event of the year. Breakfast provided by the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier Lakes will be available for $8 per adult and $4 per child, with all proceeds donated to the Sunset Community Kitchen, Regional Foodbank and Royal Flying Doctor Service. Anyone taking their own crockery and cutlery will go into a lucky draw. The 86-year-old Mount Gambier Cycling Club and Cycling South Australia life member will be presented with a Mount Gambier Citizen of the Year award on Sunday. Mr Dowdell was president of the Mount Gambier club for 26 years and has held every other committee position except treasurer. He joined the club in October 1944 and although he ceased competitive participation in the 1950s, Mr Dowdell remains an active member by assisting with races and other events. “Cycling is a sport I really enjoy,” he said. “It’s been a lifetime interest and although I haven’t com- VISIT US ONLINE borderwatch.com.au goes around comes around Years of community service earns ‘cycling nut’ Australia Day honour peted for a long time, I follow the Tour de France and the Tour Down Under. “A lot of people are footy nuts - I’m a bike riding nut.” Away from the bicycle track, Mr Dowdell has served the community through a variety of means. He was an instructor and board member at the Boys Institute for about 10 years and spent 10 years on the dent position for the 2004/05 year. “Lions is a very worthwhile group to be a part of and I enjoy being able to put something back into the town,” he said. “The members are a great bunch of people and the companionship is wonderful. “It’s very nice to be recognised for my work, but I’m just one of many people in the community who volunteer their time for the benefi t of our community. Mount Gambier City Council. For the past 41 years, Mr Dowdell has been a member of the Lions Club of Mount Gambier. During this time he has been involved in a range of community projects, earning him the prestigious James D Richardson Honour award in 2010. Mr Dowdell is a life member of the club and held the presi- “I’ve just enjoyed helping make Mount Gambier a happier and better place.” After leaving school, Mr Dowdell completed a mechanical apprenticeship before gaining employment in a bicycle shop. About 10 years later, he opened his own bicycle shop. In 1985, Mr Dowdell and his wife Barb sold the shop and retired. The pair has three children and three great grandchildren.
