46 SWIMMING Mount Gambier THE Mount Gambier Swim Club enjoyed great success at the recent South Australian Country Championships at Murray Bridge in January. The team performed well to come away with 31 medals and finish three places higher than last year, coming sixth out of 26 clubs. Luke Janssen in his first country championship event won two gold and two bronze medals and was the backstroke champion for the event. The under 12 boys relay team of Henry Muller, 9, Janssen, 11, Jack Kleinig, 10 and Archie Muller, 10, worked hard to win a third placing in the freestyle and medley relays which was a highlight for the young swimmers. Other swimmers including Chiara Davies and Mia Kleinig both swam personal best times at the event while the under 16 girls medley relay smashed the competition and won by 25 metres. The Gazzards and Opies are veterans of the sport now, but for most of these swimmers it was a first attending a country championship event and to take home medals was an exciting achievement.
