And while Tourneur was not surprised at winning, most racegoers and racecaller Terry MacAuliffe thought otherwise in a very deceptive finish. Manarola Magic seemed destined for victory for the final furlong after dashing past the leader Tuscan Ranger at the 300 metres. In what was the mare’s best effort since joining the Ian “Ned” Walker stable late last year, Lead The Witness got the photo by a nostril thanks to a top Tourneur ride. “She loomed up to win but it took until the last stride to get there,” Tourneur added. Ramsgate was being hailed the winner when he cruised up to the leaders half way up the straight but his run ended quickly. The favourite Tons Of Dash had no luck getting a run until it was too late and ran home strongly for third. Formerly trained by Tony McEvoy, Lead The Witness has now won two of her past three starts for Walker. One ride, one winner STRATHALBYN apprentice Caitlin Forrest made the most of her only ride for the day with a narrow win aboard Lil’ Storm Queen in the 900 metre maiden. At the mare’s first run for seven months, Lil’ Storm Queen gave her trainer – the Morphettville based Simon Bates – four successive winners. Bates trained a treble at the non-TAB Kangaroo Island meeting in January and had not had a runner since. “She didn’t need much further,” a delighted Bates said, referring to the fact RACE 4: Elines and Video Games could not be separated, resulting in a dead heat in the O’Connor and Graney/Sabois Maiden Plate at the Allan Scott Glenburnie Racecourse. that his mare had a half length to spare over the favourite Churchilla ($2.50-$1.80) and the fast finishing Hasta La Bernie. Being slow to leave the stalls ruined the chances of the first starter Churchilla. He produced the threeyear-old chestnut filly Acid Flo for a debut win in the 1200 metre maiden. RACE 5: Lead the Witness got up over Mararola Magic and Tons of Dash during the Trevor White Engineering Services Rating 0-72 Handicap at the Allan Scott Glenburnie Racecourse yesterday. middle of the track to set up a winning lead. Stewards downgraded the track to a Slow 7 after race one. Improving in leaps and bounds GAV’S Gift has to be the most improved galloper in the Limestone Coast at present. A maiden until a month ago, Gav’s Gift won his maiden at Mount Gambier in late January and showed it was no fluke with a repeat performance yesterday. Stepping up to 0-62 class made no difference and – if anything – Gav’s Gift was even more impressive yesterday to street his rivals by five lengths. With five wins for the season, Craig Stewart has now moved clear at the top of the owner/trainers’ premiership. Jockey Amy Herrmann had the winning ride yesterday and the whip was put away with 150 metres to run. separated FOR all but the last few centimetres of the long Glenburnie straight, the grey mare Elines had the 1550 metre maiden in her keeping. But, on the line, the Wayne Walters trained Video Games drew level for the first deadheat of the 2013-14 Limestone Coast season. To many, Video Games looked to have got the stride in, but the two judges could not separate the pair. Third placegetter Nemesis made up plenty of ground in the straight at her first try over a mile. Bobbed up again UNPREDICTABLE stayer Leathal’s Legacy was at his best in another close finish to keep the judges on their toes in the 0-68 handicap. Disappointing at Naracoorte last start, Leathal’s Legacy seems to save his best for Mount Gambier and yesterday was his third win at Glenburnie from 10 starts. In a slogging finish, Leathal’s Legacy ran home strongly from third last at the 600 metres to beat the consistent pair of Nothin Leica Flash and Nullarbor. Long delay CORRECT weight on the final race was delayed due to another exceptionally close finish. Most Awesome and Mr Lamborghini hit the line together on a day of close finishes and the judges gave the nod to the Belinda O’Loughlin trained Most Awesome by the barest of margins. Correct weight was declared 25 minutes while the photo finish was inspected by those involved with the runner-up. In a race which changed complexion several times over the final 400 metres, Son Of Coco, Mademoiselle Denon, Most Awesome and Mr Lamborghini were all being hailed the winner at some stage. Ride of the day: Dominic Tourneur (Lead The Witness). Black bookers: Hasta La Bernie, Tons Of Dash.
