Bowlers in shades of green IN THE SPIRIT: Keeping with the spirit of Irish Night, RSL Bowling Club member Rex Heins dressed appropriately. THE Mount Gambier RSL and District Bowling Club turned green last week for Irish Night. The night was hailed a success with around 80 members and visitors attending. Those attending were greeted at the door by Irish music, green and orange balloons and streamers decorating the club rooms. To add to the authenticity of the event, green beer and Guiness were available at the bar plus Irish stew and steak and Guiness pies were on the menu. Teagen Block, granddaughter of Jim and Eileen Cruise entertained the crowd with Irish dancing and many of the members enthusiastically joined in the singing of favourite Irish songs and Karaoke. Many ALMOST THERE: The mother and daughter pairing of Katie and Fleur Roachock finished runner-up by just one shot in the Women’s Championship Pairs event at the Mount Gambier and District RSL Bowling Club. Please contact coaches if unavailable. 642201 36 - The Border Watch, Friday, February 28, 2014 TOP MEN: Robert Corner and Graeme Smith were crowned champions in the Men’s Championship Pairs event at the Mount Gambier and District RSL Bowling Club. members joined in the spirit of the evening, dressing in suitable costumes, with Rex and Linda Heins, John and Liz Schroder and Jim and Eileen Cruise going to the extreme. Pennant competitions AND in the pennant bowling the club is also celebrating, with another successful minor season. In the women’s competition, the Division 1 Red and Division 3 sides completed the minor round on top of the ladder while the Saturday women finished second. In the men’s pennant, the Division 1 Red finished top, Division 1 Blue third, the Division 2 side finished second and Divisions 3, 4 and 5 are all in the final four. The finals of the Men’s Championship Pairs was held on February 21 with the team of Robert Corner and Graeme Smith defeating John Forster and Ron Cook. The Women’s Championship Pairs has also been decided with the experienced combination of Maxine France and Lola McKenzie taking the honours. In the final they faced the mother and daughter pairing of Fleur and Katie Roachock, who led for the entire game until the 15th and final end. In their three previous games, France and McKenzie had grasped victory on the final end by one shot and being true to form, they again claimed victory by just one shot when France trailed the jack with her last bowl to score two and the championship, 16-15. France and McKenzie went on to play in the Champion-ofChampions where they were defeated in the second round by eventual winners, Millicent.
