6 CANDIDATES HAVE THEIR SAY all candidates deserve praise for stepping up to service community Don PeGleR INDEPENDENT I HAVE the upmost respect for all of the candidates and especially for those who know they cannot win but still put their names forward in the interest of the party they represent and the ideals that they have. It takes a very special person to put their name forward and to be subjected to public scrutiny and ridicule. Peter Heaven obviously has a passion for Family First and the Christian values that they uphold. I have only met Peter a couple of times, but I find him to be a very pleasant person. Troy Bell has a great passion for winning the seat and serving the Liberal Party. He has run a very thorough and well financed campaign. While Troy has only been on the political scene for the last year, I have found him to be a good bloke who is well-respected in the community. Jim Maher is a champion of the Labor Party and well deserving of his life membership. Jim upholds traditional Labor values and is not afraid to speak up when he believes that his party is going down the wrong track. John Basely is a dedicated Green who has a passion for our environment. independent and liberal show Mount Gambier electorate not taken for granted PeTeR heaVen TO his credit, Troy Bell has been active campaigning in the seat for quite some time, with the assistance of the Member for Barker. It is natural for the Liberal Party to want to fight hard to secure a seat that has been won by independents in the last few elections. Mount Gambier people have shown they will not be taken for granted and it appears to me that Mr Bell and Mr Pegler have been out there working to show them they will not be taken for granted. I can only ask voters to look at their specific commitments for this electorate, and their achievements to date, in considering whether they or the party they represent will take you for granted. support for libs plan appreciated TRoy bell LIBERAL I AM glad the incumbent Member for Mount Gambier supports FAMILY FIRST the Liberals’ commitment to provide CFS volunteers with the same access to compensation for specified cancers as paid fire-fighters. It was pleasing to see the Weatherill Labor Government copy the State Liberals’ plans to increase funding for the Patient Assistance Transport Scheme. Mount Gambier community best served by an experienced leader JiM MaheR LABOR MOSTLy, candidates and elected representatives are decent people who are committed to serve their communities. We may not always agree on policy and values, but we try to respect people. Family First’s Peter Heaven impresses me with his thoughts on active ageing and respect for elders. The Greens’ John Basely is a committed and open candidate. It is refreshing to hear him accepting he is not an expert on all things and I strongly encourage him to continue an active role in our community. Independent Don Pegler had a remarkable record in local government. 6 - The Border Watch, Wednesday, March 12, 2014 Many of his achievements for Mount Gambier went largely unnoticed and without credit. As a member of parliament, Don has been an effective advocate for our region - he is more concerned with getting things done than grandstanding and self-promotion. He understands regional people and issues. Despite his rhetoric and selfpromotion, the Liberal candidate has offered little. His masters from Adelaide and his local fan club have pushed him aside. He happily claims credit where it is not due (eg PATS). I have not heard any comment on substantive policy matters (not even on his special area of education), so I cannot identify any strengths or positive policies. Candidate qualities are commendable John baseley GREENS I COMMEND Troy Bell and his concerns with the mental health crisis we have here in the South East. Mental health is the poor cousin when it comes to health budget allocations and I applaud him for bringing to light the current situation we now have here in Mount Gambier and its surrounding areas. Jim Maher, a long-term Labor supporter, is a genuine man with a pleasing personality. I commend him in stepping up to the plate for Labor here in Mount Gambier with the current situation we are in, and the decisions Labor has made in the past few years that have proven unpopular. We have to acknowledge the effort Don Pegler has already done for the seat of Mount Gambier and the benefits he has already brought to the region of which we can all be thankful for. As for Peter Heaven, I know very little about him personally and only met him briefly during the ballot paper position draw. I commend him for standing as a candidate for the Family First party and the support the party has shown, along with Liberal and the Greens, in showing support for our CFS volunteers in gaining equal compensation for workplace acquired illnesses or injury.
