48 GREYHOUND RACING OntheLure with DAVID LEWIS e A MINUTE’S silence will be observed prior to the fi rst race at Tara Raceway’s Anzac Day meeting in a fortnight’s time as a sign of respect and a time for refl ection. Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club secretary/treasurer Barry Shepheard said this week that following consultation with the Returned and Services League all races would carry an Anzac related name. “In addition, the RSL has agreed to us running the Anzac Cup and Anzac Sprint,” he said. “These two features will both carry an extra $250 in prize money plus a trophy with the Anzac Cup being run over 512 metres for the best eight greyhounds while the Anzac Sprint will be a 400 metre event for the best eight nominated.” Gate takings from the Anzac Day meeting will be donated to Legacy. Mount Gambier RSL Club president, Mr Bob Sandow said this week that his committee was very pleased the MGGRC was embracing the Anzac spirit and wished the club every success with the race meeting. The day will also be special for Ivor Dowdell, of Yahl, who served in Borneo during World War II. Dowdell, who is still training greyhounds and rarely misses a Tara Raceway meeting, will turn 92 on Anzac Day. VISIT US ONLINE borderwatch.com.au A period of silence at Tara Raceway Dash (512m) for the best eight bitches nominated. This race will carry a service to Victorian sire Hutmaker. From Tassie to Tahara BERNIE Rogers, of Tahara, reports that former smart Tasmanian bitch, Dang Shen has whelped a litter of one dog and seven bitches to high profi le sire Fear Zafonic. Owned at Tolmans Hill by Robert English, Dang Shen, a daughter of Slater and Oxley Apache, won 13 races on Tasmanian tracks for $28,000 in prizemoney. This is Dang Shen’s second litter, her fi rst being whelped eight months ago at Tolmans Hill to former top Tasmanian dog Thirteen Black. And Rogers had success with another former Tassie dog in Iron Shen at Tara Raceway last Sunday. Also bred by English, Iron Shen ANZAC SPIRIT: Mount Gambier man, Ivor Dowdell will celebrate his 92nd birthday on Anzac Day with a special greyhound meeting at Tara Raceway. Easter racing GREYHOUND racing will also be conducted at Tara Raceway on Easter Sunday (April 20) with another feature event highlighting the meeting. The Easter Gift, which has been slotted into the feature race calendar, will be run over 512 metres for Free For All greyhounds and also carry an extra $250 in prize money. The Anzac and Easter feature events will follow on from today’s Allestree Holiday Units grade fi ve fi nal which carries an extra $250 in prizemoney. And then in early May will be the Gambier Vets feature grade fi ve (400m) which will be followed later in the month with the Damsels scored an easy win in the Produce Store Stake (400m) when leading all the way from box one to defeat Pete’s Pet by six lengths in 23.45 seconds. The win broke a run of outs at Tara Raceway for Rogers who was last successful there at the end of January with Daenerys. He races the lightly-framed daughter of Knocka Norris and Scorpio Assassin in partnership with well-known Adelaide greyhound identity Veronica Talbot. “I picked up Iron Shen last August for $750 after she had been broken in,” Rogers said. Nothing Shakey about Jakey THE whole greyhound world is talking about Shakey Jakey this week. He’s the 23-month-old black pup that won by 20 lengths at his fi rst race start last Sunday at Wentworth Park. But not only that, he also broke the 520 metre track record when clocking 29.07 seconds. Owned and trained by David Pringle at Clergate in NSW, Shakey Jakey is a son of leading sire Collision out of Kiacatoo Pearl, a winner of six races from only 15 starts. Not surprisingly, the offers have come thick and fast with Pringle reportedly knocking back one of $500,000.
