Thousands of people are again expected to attend services and marches around the Limestone Coast tomorrow, each with their own connection to the country’s bloody history. Picture: BRAND’S LAIRA Pioneer farewelled Prominent Coonawarra wine fi gure passes away, aged 96 KEN BR brett@ KENNEDY RETT email@example.com ONE of the most prominent fi gures in the establishment of Coonawarra as a premium wine region passed away on Tuesday morning, aged 96. Eric Brand OAM fi rst made his mark when he and wife Nancy (deceased) acquired the Laira vineyard in 1950, after serving in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in Papua New Guinea and Borneo during World War II. So numerous are the stories of bravery and loss, many heroes will be remembered by a select few. Some not at all. Whether it is an ancestor who served in World War I, a great grandmother who was widowed and managed to raise her family alone or a neighbour who is now serving the country, everyone has reason to pause and refl ect tomorrow.
